ID REQUEST: Several Kansas Diciduous Forest Mushrooms of Great Intrest
    #8365455 - 05/05/08 03:39 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Ok so, my buddy and I decided to go out for a hike in the woods today after having my mom find "some weird looking shroom" in our peony bush. I went out and looked and it was a 4" god damned yellow morel.

So we went out to a couple of locations. The first was with little to no luck. We found 1 nice sized dryed out morel. The stem was still moist but mostly not good. So I consider that toast.

Kansas Deciduous forest Just after some rain and some warm days. Also had some hailacious storms. No lie. Like litterally hail and high winds and tornados all around. Midwestern Armageddon. Lots of rain with lots of sun and warmth. About 72 degrees out. Sun shining.

Here are the ones of great interest to us.

-----------------------------

I have narrowed these down to about 2 or so.

They are either:

-Sarcoscypha coccinea
or
-Sarcoscypha occidentalis

Thinking it is the 1st one. Correct me if I am wrong.

They were stuck onto sticks and dead trees that were on top or partially covered with other sticks, bark, dirt, or other decayed organic mater. They exhibit slight stems that are longer than the cups are wide, but as they are so young. I think I can safely say that they will grow out.

---------------------------

On to the next one, I am sure is an Oyster. Not sure exactly what kind though. It was on an upright dead log. I would assume that it is a pearl oyster. Just an assumption from pics I have seen.  The shrooms were actually forming between the bark and the wood inside. It has pushed off pieces and when they get big enough they form in large clusters. I pulled a small piece of bark off and I could see that there was myc all throughout that thing. They were huge and plenty. Only problem. POISON IVY ALL OVER THAT PLACE! Which sucks. My buddy and I have had the most luck in that little section of some of his woods. That was where we found some really really really good ones. Down the road is the morel patch. Not AS MUCH poison ivy. but it is still there. The price we have to pay I guess. Here's the pics. I will definatley take spore prints and some day I will hope to flesh it out on agar to agar transfers once I get this huge fan sitting in my spare room hooked up into the flow hood of my dreams.

The pics:

Well there is the one pic I should say. The image site is bing a punk.

--------------------------------

Here is the last ones. I am afraid to hear what you are all about to tell me. For I am pretty sure they are not what I want them to be. So I will not be eating them, but for shits and giggles.... Here it is.

Present on ground on forest floor, on decayed and decaying leaves, twigs branches, dirt and even in some cases right next to dear and other animal poop. They appeared mostly close to if not on twigs that were partially buried. Some cases they were in the decaying matter being splayed by a branch in the way. As they reach maturity the caps turns darker brown and finally reaching black with darker markings as in the rings you see present only darker than the rest. So basically the same markings only everything looks really really black and dark.  Slightly Hallow stems. Not very hallow but there is a slight cavern present. Some of the mushrooms seem to have a slight nipple appearance.  Flattening out as they reach maturity with some almost resembling an inverted umbrella to a slight extent with the gills puffed out.

I am not going to persuade any guesses on it as I will make an ass out of my self and not hear what I want to anyways. So I hope they are but expect nothing.

------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for stopping in and looking out. I appreciate all the help from you guys. Today was a lucky day to some extent. And it was and still is a learning experience. 3 mushrooms possibly identified.  More identification experience under the ol' belt. Only a hell of a lot more to go to be able to be confident.

Given the size of the stem, and that you found them east of the Rocky Mountains, I'm inclined to think those first ones are Sarcoscypha occidentalis. We would need fresh specimens and a microscope to be certain. It would also be useful if you knew what type of wood they were growing from.

Happy mushrooming!
