birth now? birth later? your input appreciated.
    #835846 - 08/22/02 11:12 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Hello. I know this girl who has had fully colonized BRF/verm cakes sitting in her closet for the last 2 days. MMGG told her to birth them right away. Should she do that? Or should she wait a week like she read to do somewhere else? Or should she wait for pins to form like she read yet another place? She has read too much and now she can't make a decision. I wish I could help her, but I would never involve myself in such illegal activity. Will you help her? That would be so great.

thinQ mucho!

I say birth them if they're at 100%.

AAAAAH! Now she is even more indecisive. Who should she listen to? She would like to request that future respondants support their answers! Why why why?

and also, she thinking of cold shocking 3, dunking and cold shocking 3, and casing 3 (she has 9 jars). Is she treating this too much like an experiment? Should she just go ahead and dunk all six?

again, thinQ.

dog is correct if you want them to fruit as cakes like I assumed wait for them to start pinning but if you are going to case them and they are fully colonized case them now.....

Truth is, there are so many differing opinions because it doesn't matter much.

I don't know about casing, but Baby Mengelee would expose to light for a week, or until pins start to show, whichever comes first, if she is fruiting cakes.

Don't let the pins get more than 1/4 inch before birthing. They can be a real pain in the ass to get out of the jar if you wait too long.

If someone were to be starting an outdoor patch they would probably want to let them sit in the incubator for a few days before tossing them in the hole.

I'd wait a few days after reaching what appears to be 100% colonization. The reason for this is because althought the outside of the cake may be 100% colonized, you can't see the inside, which may not be. Remember, you usually innoculate the outside of the cake, so that's where the mycelium grows first. Waiting a little longer makes sure that the inside of the cake has had plenty of time to colonize, thus reducing the chances of contamination.

If the outside of the cake is 100% colonized, how can something get to the inside without also compromising the outside?

mickey_rouke,

You have a point if you're just going to stick the cakes in a terrarium as is, but if he decides to case, he will probably choose to break them up, thus exposing the uncolonized brf to possible contamination.

Regardless, according to the faq, letting the cakes colonize longer will still result in better fruiting.

disclaimer, my friend is stoned. ..

I VERY much appreciate ALL of your input. Thank you so much. I feel much better now. My inclination is to experiment anyway, so that is what I'll do. At least I have confidence that I have pretty good chances no matter what I try.

However, to the administrator dude who keeps telling me, wait, i mean, my *friend* to read the faq. If you read my original post you would see that my problem is that I read like 5000 different documents and they said different things, so I thought I would get some human input.

Also, my friend objects to being referred to as a "he" She is quite a she!

I love you all!

My cat followed the PF tek at fanaticus.com and used the PF strain. The tek said to allow pins to form before birthing for a larger flush. Waiting up to a month is fine. One of her jars had pins on it when it was birthed and it fruited better and earlier than the jars with no pins. She read many times about the benefits of dunking so she dunked for 12 hours before birthing (even the one with the pins on it) and they all flushed well. Waiting a week won't hurt the cakes as long as everything was done right. Meow.

Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.
