Coliflowers?? Huh?
    #836541 - 08/22/02 06:12 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Well, since I didn't want to wait for casing to form I went back to cakes for old times sake. Right now I am having trouble getting them pin. I've had them a temperature range of 70-75 F, 95-100 % humidity, been fanning 3 - 5 times a day, and have had it 12h on 12h off with blue lights. Now there are these cauliflower like growths coming off of the cake that I don't think a pins or pre pins. What do you guys think?

have you considered dunking?

the cauliflower growths could be aborts. try picking it off and disecting the growth. but then they could very well be mycellium from the amount of humidity. sometimes when it gets too humid the mycellium gets really damn fluffy.

Could be too high humidity. Sounds like mycelium growing out of the cake.

My kitty had some weird looking shit on her cakes too. White, sponge-like blobs formed in the jars on two of the cakes at the bottom. She thinks it happened because there was too much water on the bottom. This time she put a little dry vermiculite in the bottom to regulate moisture and didn't pack the substrate.
Purrr.

Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.

Well I forgot to say that I dunked the cakes before birthing them. I think that problem is that the humity is too high. Im going to stop hand spraying since i have a bubbler and perlite going anyways. Also, the cakes may be water loged as well. Im going to fix the problem now. One more question if i want to put a tooth pick in my cakes to be able to move them and such is there any spicial things i need to do to the toot pick? Thanks

just wash your hands and pick them up, you don't want to stick a tooth pick into your cakes. doing so could introduce contams directly inside the cake.
