an alcohol stupor seems a motif among zen masters, hermits, and beatniks alike.

why?

Anyone calling themselves a master is selling something.

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

after renouncing material and social involvments the zen student may retreat to pursue enlightening practices.

Soon the urge to return home and help in any way blooms - you could call it loving kindness, so they take themselves back to their villages.

Humor is an integral part of the light they carry with in them, and to share that they join in mirthful endeavors.
The medicinal jug of wine symbolizes the humor they share with their people...

i think there are less drunken masters than non-drunken masters.

and considering most people drink (and did drink), it would seem mastering stuff favors the sober.

what ever medicine is most effective to your people when you return.
that is the medicine you become associated with.
the big thing is the healing.
all the good masters are good healers (mind healers, life healers).

'The medicinal jug of wine symbolizes the humor they share with their people...'

Perhaps if the 'master' was sharing his mixed wine he could just shut his mouth??

mostly his presence is all that is necessary
but I think this is about the depiction

see the description of the tenth ox herding picture (not always with a jug o wine anyway)http://www.terebess.hu/english/oxherding.html

The 10 Bulls is more than poetry, more than pictures. It is a
revelation of spiritual unfoldment paralleled in every bible of human
experience. May the reader, like the Chinese patriarch, discover the footprints
of his potential self and, carrying the staff of his purpose and the wine jug of
his true desire, frequent the market place and there enlighten others.

Once one has glimpsed the eternal abyss, there is little to do but get drunk. How else can one deal with such devastating knowledge?

Yell out loud once or twice and youll drink rice wine from a canister, can you sit down without a frown?

Im from a flaming hob goblin and I hate where this is going, I wate for the tornado of thunder to break asunder and to belate my runners, I cant weight to debate Cate and late my freight car of desire, I taught a witch to hunt a bitch, and wished upon a merigold round and frowned upside down when I came around the bend, I just broke my will, can you can too?
