I think even the hardest soldiers feel fear sometimes in war. Some may conquer there fear of bullets to some extent from constant exposure. But then they may be in close quarter fighting and have to use bayonets and knives and they will feel it. Or they get shot and the fear returns. Fear is impossible to eliminate. Imagine being in world war 1 and having to run out of the trenches across no mans land with bullets flying at you and your friends dieing beside you, you get to the other side and have to fight using the sharp edge of your shovel against another man using a shovel or a bayonet. Theres people next to you getting stabbed and mutilated with shovels. No matter how much you live in the moment, you will feel terror.

I don't think so. When these bullets are flying at you and you feel the fear. Are you afraid to get hit by the bullets? Are you afraid to feel pain? Or are you afraid to die? I think it is mostly the latter. If you accept that you will die, that you are not immortal you will be able to get rid of your fear to die. If you are no longer afraid to die you can completely stay in this moment and stay in control.
You know you might be running into a bullet or a knife. But it no longer matters because it is out of your hands. You are going to expose yourself to danger. This is a certainty. But you are going to face the consequences it might hold. And you are going to accept the consequences.

Such as extreme agonizing pain? The only way to overcome this fear would be to deny reality, some people are good at this, but not many are that good.

But in saying that i think the samurai came close to doing what your talking about. They had belief that you should live every moment expecting death to come in the next instant, it helped them to conquer their fear of death and to live totally in the moment. But i also think fear is as much a physical reaction as a mental one. If something sudden happens all your preparations go out the window. And Ive seen some things which make me believe that everyone will feel fear at certain moments, some things in life can be truly fucked up, like getting burnt at the stake or running up the beach in the battle for Normandy.

I think there were and there are a number of people who are "that good". It is just hard to imagine for us since we are nowhere near this level of self control. I think it is some sort of enlightenment to reach this point. Martial enlightenment perhaps? Or maybe any kind of enlightenment will end all fear.
