food dehydrator

are there any types of food dehydrators that are particularly bad for drying shrooms?

Is there any noticeable loss of potency due to drying in a food dehydrator?

I am looking into getting one on ebay.com

Yes. Heat breaks down psilos
Look for a no-heat dehydrator. If you happen to get a dehydrator with an adjustable temperature setting that you can switch to 0 heat, you're golden. If not you can always cut power to the heating element so that it's air-circulation only.

it seems like any dehydrator that doesnt use heat would be like using a fan in a closed container

I pre-dry for about 12 hrs. with a Mr. Coffee dehydrator that has the heating element removed. I then place them in the desiccant chamber for about another day. Works great!
Removing the element was easy squeezy also.

Is your house air conditioned? If so the humidity is probably not that high inside

I just place several layers of paper towels between the shrooms and the desiccant. Works fine for me. I don"t (think I) have any problems that way.

wow, that really works? how long does it take?

you put dessicant into the bottom of a container, then paper towels, then shrooms, and put the lid on the container and wait?

At Walmart I found something that would make for a great dessicating chamber. Near the microwave section was a " 'MiracleWARE' Quick & Easy 3 Piece Defroster & Storage Set ". Basically, it's a piecrust shaped bowl with a thick plastic grill that's raised up off the bottom (for putting silica gel, or what have you, underneath), and a clear lid. It's intended to be used in the microwave for defrosting meats and steaming veggies and is large enough to hold a paper plate. Fairly decent size for small jobs, I believe.

There are two holes in the lid for ventilation but tape takes care of that, making it relatively airtight. A rubber ring around the lid might improve the plastic-on-plastic seal.

The price on it was $4.82

Also, Walmart carries a 10 lb bag of crystalline silica under the brandname "Oil Dri" for $1.97!
Gotta love Wallyworld

Works fine for me. Some people are paranoid about the desiccant supposedly "leeching" into the shrooms this way or by placing them directly on desiccant. Mine are absolutely fine this way (paper towels, about 4 layers).
It only takes about a day after pre-drying in the cold dehydrator.
just dont be shaking up the container spreading the dust around. That is the only way see to have problems

do you think the tiny pebbles of calcium chloride that comes in damp rid containers is a good dessicant? it's not dust...more like big grains of white sand or something

It works fine, but is overpriced in my opinion. I use Dri-rite (I think). It is calcium chloride also and only costs sa couple of bucks.emember moisture will eventually collect in the bottom of the container and will need to be drained off with Damp Rid The Dri-Rite tends to turn powdery with repeated uses, in my limited experience .
