Rye grain holds 50%moisture with ease...what about after a dunk?
    #8328400 - 04/25/08 08:20 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

We hydrate rye to 50 percent water no prob right? I am really pushing towards just using grains to fruit from. I was wondering how well a pure rye substrate performed at resaturation via dunking. Ive read that straight grain substrates make an virtual mycelial brick that is kinda hard to rehydrate. Any takes?

Just keep your humidity high and don't worry about re-hydrating. Rye works great. Done right you can't get any better yields.

Plain rye by itself will fruit poorly, if at all. Read up on casing.

RR is right, it definitely needs to be cased. I figured that you knew that.

I guess this is my fault for not being more specific. I would never fruit from a anything without a casing. Thanks for speaking up though!

For the main body of substrate I will have a mixture of 2lb dry rye and 1.5 cups of rye. I calculated that the amount of verm I add will hold half of the water needed for 100BE total crop wise. Straight verm for casing.

This is all going down inside a gallon jar. Should come to about half full. I'm contemplating whether or not I will have a prob getting it to colonize in the jar. 10ml of mycelium water to 2lb dry rye should be fine.

I'm still not too clear on what you are asking.  Hopefully someone with more experience comes on.

RR

unless you are me.   It's possible to fruit a solid rye cake (like the top one here).  But generally speaking RR is correct.  The bottom one is a straight WBS cake.  Both of the cakes were dunked and rolled without any problem.  They did absorb an unmeasured amount of water.
