HELP! How can I transport pinning BRF cakes?
    #8337153 - 04/28/08 11:08 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I am moving into a new place and have pretty much everything out of my old place except for my FC. Right now I have 4 BRF cakes in the FC. It is my first grow and one cake has been developing a healthy looking pinset over the last couple of days. I expect the other 3 cakes to pin within the week.

I need to move my FC and those 4 cakes by Wed night at the latest. Earlier would be better, however, since I can currently only fan and mist the FC 2 times per day at my old place.

If I leave the cakes in my FC they will tip over and then roll around inside the FC. Im sure I will have massive bruising issues if this lhappens, and all of my pins will probablly abort.

Im just curious if anyone has any suggestions on how I can do this without damaging any of the cakes or the pins. I thought about placing each in a freezer bag with some water (the drive is only about 20 minutes). Other than that I dont really have any other ideas..... any suggestions?

you could put them in a cooler(ice chest)or in a card board box/ and tape the box shut.

but what ever you do, put them in the trunk of your car...

for your own safety!~

I always get a little paranoid when transporting stuff, myself.

I don't think I'd be transporting anything that is already pinning...
I'd probably pull the pins and put them back into jars.
That way if I did get pulled over they aren't going to be seeing fruits on cakes.

HI Roadkill,

Thanks a lot for you advice here. Actually my FC is a coleman cooler. I'm not so worried about the temps or humidity, but instead i'm worried about them tipping over and rolling around and getting all bumped up, etc.

If I do take them out and put them in jars, do you think this would damage the mycelium? would it be advisable to fill the jars and give them a dunk (I didn't dunk at birth)?

I will think about removing the pins, but if I decide to try and move with them on, do you have any suggestions for how i could do it without damaging them? Is this even possible?

thanks a lot man!

Maybe scrape the pins off, submerge in ice water in a cooler and take it to your new place. The next day roll them and place them in their new FC. I wouldn't count on those pins staying healthy if you take the cakes on a car ride.

I suppose I could remove them...  It's just disappointing since these are my first pins!  Oh well, I guess it sounds like the only option....

if anyone else has any ideas, please let me know

Personally, I wouldn't remove them. How far of a drive is the new place? I'd just drive carefully, keep it in the trunk, secured, and maybe out of sight (a couple boxes full of stuff placed around it?).

Jadis,

it's a 20 minute drive, and personally i'm not worried about getting pulled over, and I can put a blanket over it, etc.

any suggestions on how I can keep the BRF cakes from tipping over and rolling around in the FC?

Like Roadkill mentioned, I would put them back into their jars.

Not a great idea but maybe something, what about jar lids with nails or something attached to the center of them to skewer the cakes. It would create a wider base to keep them from tipping but I'd, be worried about contams unless you sterilize really well. There have been several teks on using skewered cakes to allow for more cakes in a single fc that have proven successful so idk, just an idea.

That's interesting, because I was actually thinking of using wooden skewers to hold them in place. My FC has a plastic mesh that holds the cakes above the perlite. you can see this plastic mesh tray in the pic at http://img103.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pinsdd5.jpg). these fit very well into the FC and are stable. I could put a skewer or toothpick into the bottom and top of each cake, and then place another of ther plastic mesh trays on the top. this would prevent them from jostling around, however, I was worried about possible contam as well.

These cakes have been fully colonized for a few weeks at least - would that help stave off contams? The only thing is, I wouldn't be able to see any internal contamination.

I just moved and had the same dilemma.  If the bottom of your FC is lined with perlite, and your cakes are on foil.  Get a long spoon or something and lightly push the perlite around your cakes while still under the foil.  Keep them in your car where the least amount of bumping is going on and roll with it.  I did this last week and they all made it without tipping over :goodluck:

I see now.  They are on a mesh screen.  If you have bought jars lately they might have come with one of those cardboard dividers, use that and simply place over your cakes.  If you don't have any then go to sonic and ask for a couple drink carriers, worst comes to worst go for breakfast order one drink and get one, then lunch and do the same.  Cut the bottoms out and that should work as well.

I would try to use metal skewers, I'd be very worried about wood. Check this out http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/1608979#1608979

hrm Offlinedestindiver1980,

this idea of pushing the perlite up around the cakes sounds like it might work best for me. did yuou have any fruits at the bottom of your cakes when you did this? i have like 7 pins aroud the base of one cake, and am afraid they might abort if i try this. maybe i could flip the cake upside down.

I would guess you could flip it, yes I did have some pins around the base and it didn't bother them. I packed it lightly but just enough to keep them from rocking too much. I didn't pack tight for that reason, had pins on the bottom. Good luck
