I caught a lizard today

This thing was stuck in a container at my workplace and I saved it...decided to keep it.
(It's about 6" long)
After work I went out and built a nice big wood/wire mesh cage for it.
But now I'm starting to wonder if maybe I shouldn't have taken it out of it's natural habitat like that. I spent like $50 on the materials for the cage...but I almost want to let it go. I wonder how much it will care? Perhaps it will acclimate and be just as happy as it would have been in the desert?

It's a female so the belly is white.
Spiny desert lizard -- is the common name.

Looks like a fence lizard to me.
You should really let it go. Wild caught reptiles don't do so well in captivity. If you keep it, by time you realize it is sick it will be to late.

If you want a pet, please buy a captive bread animal. There is no sense in taking one out of the wild when there are so many animals for sale that need good homes.
Not to mention wild caught reptiles don't always adapt well to captivity.

Ok, so you guys convinced me to release it.
I have a nice cage and all the accessories for a reptile now...so I think I may go out and buy one that's been raised in captivity though.

I used to catch and play with those lizards ALL THE TIME when I was little. Their tails fall off if you miss your initial grab and snag their tail. They'll grow back, though.
If you hang a piece of carpet or a floor mat over a hot brick wall and come back an hour or two later on a really hot sunny day and you're almost guaranteed to have a couple of them resting in the shade.

me too, me and Cakes must live somewhat close to eachother. I see countless lizards all day running around out here. I would not feel guilty about catching one as long as I took good care of it. They are prime pray for snakes, birds, and little ground mammals.

Haha, I'm in NW Phoenix -- pretty sure you're in Tempe? I found this thing out in Vistancia (115th ave and Happy Valley area).
Anyway, I did some research online and found lots of people saying that lizards captured from the wild will usually die within months of capture. Apparently they almost inevitably have parasites in the wild, which is normal. However, when they are brought into captivity the stress will cause their immune system to go down, allowing the parasites to take over.
Ima browsin the pet stores for reptiles today. Can't afford anything expensive as I just spent $80 on the cage and supplies yesterday.
I used to have a badass green iguana named Bobo. He was such an asshole and got kinda hard to take care of though. Ended up giving him away to some good people.

Im actually south of Phoenix at the moment living with the folks and working on the farm.
Im glad you posted about the parasites because ive been trying to catch one of those fuckers for awhile but they are too quick for me.
I thought about catching a scorpion also since those are pretty common.
You'll have to post some pictures up if you end up finding something.
