currently a friend i know uses sheers to cut straw by hand indoor
considering low cost methods, what are some people's indoor methods in cutting strawfor spawn. for those whom might not have access to outdoor tools or tool use.
1. sheers (scissors)=tired hands and tedious 2. paper cutter=pain in butt 3. blender=cuts to fine/small and jams easily 4. anyone try beef cutter(flat blade) to chop?
5. ? looking for new ways?=show your innovativeness!

Rent a chipper/shredder for a day. They make mincemeat out of mucho/many bales -- quick. Next effort "indoors" is, try a skill saw and/or electric hedge trimmer. Trick there -- is to keep bale edge bound tight while cutting off small sections -- of it. SixTango

leave it tied in the bale, use a circular saw to cut of as much as you need, right before you get to the 1st string, tie another a little farther back, so the bale dont fall apart.

go to pet superstore buy big bag of precut straw for rabbits etc laugh at silly people chopping up their own straw I imagine it probably costs more than buying a bale of straw, but not THAT much more I can get a big 1x2x3' block of compressed chopped straw for ?3 or less around here and it's so much tidier.

Not to try and be less than helpful, but why not just not chop it? Compression during colonization has proven chopping useless IME. Weigh it down with a grid (flourescent light reflector works well) and cinder block. You'll never chop again!

Along the lines of the lawn mower. . .
Lay about 4-5 inches of whole straw on the bottom of a rubbermaid [or bucket]; Use the lid to partially shield the shrapnel that will fly after you buzz the weedeater inside of it for a few minutes.
Alternatively for no shrapnel, get a big plastic garbage bag and put the rubbermaid/bucket inside of it. . .put the weedeater head inside the rubbermaid/bucket and wrap the neck of the garbage bag around the handle of the weedeater. No mess!
Never tried it, but sounds fun.

I just bought 4 bales for 8 bucks. I'm going to try the compressing rather than chopping. I'd like to keep the flakes intact. i plan to Pasturize the whole bale intact in a metal trashcan or steel drum somehow.

So whats it run for a bag of chopped straw at pet store in U.S. and how big do they sell them? champions said 3 e where he lives.
Q & A:
Benefits of chopped straw? ?
Aids by providing less space and being tighter packed thus making the mycelium travel and spawn faster.
How does unchopped straw compacted down and held by specific amount of weight (per sq. foot) on straw/spawn work compared to chopped and pressed?
If held by enough weight at a constant pressure (enough to bring together straw tightly for more mycelium contact) the straw/spawn will travel and spawn just as fast as chopped method, for the pressure (even) allows all straw to touch and thus colonate quickly. Amount of weight and even pressure makes impact.
So should people waste their time chopping straw?
Should we all convert to weight and pressed spawning with straw?
Mycofile suggested using a big brick and screen material for adequate pressure after initial pressing to hold and thus relieve the idea behind chopping straw.
More input! Good thread so far!

Shroomgod pretty much sums everything about straw up in his tek. Other than a few minutia, nothing else needs to be said. From his tek:
In reply to:
TIP 1: If you buy a panel of "egg crate" light diffuser material--any decent hardware store will care this in the lighting department--then you can really increase the how evenly and fast the tray colonizes. All you need to do is cut the material to the size of the tray surface, place it over the plastic, and weigh it down with one cinder block every 2 to 3 square feet. You can remove this after the straw has colonized before the casing is applied. This weight will give more compression of the straw making it colonize faster and more evenly. Take care to not cover many of the air holes.
TIP 2: Cutting up the straw prior to pasteurization in to 1 to 3 inches pieces makes TIP 1 not really needed. Cutting is just too much hassle for me, but maybe you have something to cut up massive amounts of straw quickly (like a mulching mower or chipper/shredder).
That in my mind sums it up. Do whatever floats your boat, but apartment dwellers with no power yard equipment will probably opt for the weight.

My friend just tried a new way to cut straw yesterday. You will need a 5 gallon bucket, electric hedge trimmers, and straw.
Grab a hand full of straw and slice it into small pieces with the trimmer into the bucket. Repeat until you think you have enough.
If you think that you need smaller pieces just stick the trimmer into the bucket and stir it around until the desired size is reached.
Worked real good for my friend, took only 10 minutes total.

Good theory, unfortunately you don't have to chop it. I rarely if ever did. Worked fine every time.

it'd probably absorb moisture, and colonize a little faster, but you can just soak it longer before hand. the water gets in there. One more thing. do you thing it's better to have clean cuts, lke a paper cutter, or rough, like a leap shreader. Not that it matters. I just got to wonerin'. my theory is that rough would be better.
