I plan on doing a coir semi-bulk grow once my WBS jars finish.Ive been reading some teks on how to past. There is alot of them out there..so my question is will this tek work for pasteurizing coir??TEKDo I simply substitute the poo for coir??Any special things I gotta do since it's coir not shit?Also...does this tek seem reliable??

when u hydrate the coir, add some worm castings, and used coffee, added to the water, so the coir sits in this mix, and expands in it..
I did this, minus the coffee, just threw some worm castings in the water...
my first flush is just comin through now!!
I know you want to be sterile to the fullest, but I honestly think that tek is a lil overboard.
check this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6043833#6043833
On my current grow, I'm doing a mini-monotub, and this si what I did man..
I boiled water, took that water added it to a bucket, added a pinch of limestone (soil sweetner), and worm castings.. I then added the half of brick, and put a cover over the bucket..
let it sit there for an hour.. and before I was ready to spawn, i got my spawn ready, I used 6 pint brf/cakes, put them into a big ziplock bag, and started crumbling the cakes to itty bitty pieces.. I made the cakes real flat, like filling the ziplock completely, a ziplock freezer bag, ya know..kept it closed and threw it on my desk...
the purpose was to let the mycelium network re-establish inside the ziplock..
I then took off the cover of the bucket, and grabbed handfulls of coir using rubber gloves, squeezed till it was moist an very little water was dripping out, field capacity..
layered it in my tub, which i previous cleaned with iso alch/ h202...layered the coir out to fill about an inch or so...then applyed the crumbled cakes, and then applyed another inch layer of coir..
I placed the tub in a black trashbag, only for about 4 days, then took it out, and I'm skipping the casing this time around, I'm letting it fruit str8 off the coir..
I got over 50 pins in this mini-monotub...
I'm excited, my first mono attempt..
I know your going to go thru the most sterile procedures first, but at some piont, try just hydrating the coir in boling water for over an hour in a bucket, and then spawning to it once its cooled down..
you'll see, you dont really need to pasturize coir.
I appluad your motivation though man!
Goodluck bro

Thanks for your replies man Your a true shroomerite. However, about your tek. When you added all the ingredients..you poured the water FIRST.And then how long you waited? Also, you didn't drain the water from the bucket..you simply scooped the coir and squuezed it hard to get most of the water out??Please tell me more about your m ethod and experience..Im planning on doing it the hardway..but I don't want to buy ovenbags, thermometers, pots n pans,etc... If theres NO POINT in past. coir. Thanks

yeah, I boiled water on my stove, then put the water into the bucket..
I immediately added the soil sweetner/worm castings.. then dumped in the half brick immediatly after..
covered the top with aluminum foil.. waited 1 hr..
then, using gloves, I picked up the coir from the bucket, not draining the water...
you're correct, I just picked up clumps an squeezed excess water out, then applied right to the tub.
fairly simple..
btw, that tek isnt my tek, but the one I followed exactly to prepare my monotub...
I will post some picutres of the tub in a few days, its exploding as we speak!
**like I said too, depending on how much spawn your working with, you can always do like I did, a small test run...you might even want to pick up a small tub, to make a monotub out of, I dont know if you've tried your hand at that?
but that would be a great way for you to take 1qt of WBS, and follow that tek regarding spawning to coir, to see for yourself: A: coir can be pasturized using hott water an a bucket. B: that monotubs are fuckin badass!
anyhow, everyone does things a tad bit different here, so I respect all techniques..
See what works for you.

I like the bucket method. I used a cheap cooler though...

crazyoutlaw: You can either take the advise that has been given or try something yourself. That is the only way you will really learn is by doing.
You will be perfectly fine if you follow the advice of hydrating coir with boiling water as per package instructions. Just do it in something insulated so the heat stays in for an hour.
It really is that simple, if you want to believe it or not. We aren't trying to sterilize anything we are just trying to remove enough of the mold spores killed by low temps, so they don't cause a problem in the substrate later.
Many food products are simply pasteurized to remove the mold spores that cause spoiling. Such as milk and apple juice, serilizing would destory the taste of the product.
Cheers.

Thanks fro the posts guys..your all giving me some much appreciated motivation for when I do my spawn run.Is it safe if I do the hydration in a rather BIG cooler..not HUGE..but pretty big. Also, when I bring the water to a boil..is it a ROLLING & OUT OF CONTROL boil..or more of a simmer/starting to boil??And how much coir to a half-pint jar of WBS??Im not doing quarts cus my PC is tiny:(,just half-pint WBS jars..And finally..Im planning on preparing the bulk trays in open air in my (rather dirty)kitchen,do I have to spray the air with Lysol or other disinfectant.Or am I safe as long as I move quickly and wear latex gloves??Thanks so much guys

I copied this from an earlier post regarding coffee and coir. (sorry I don't have the link)
RogerRabbit said "The coffee you use in substrates is ONLY what you empty out of the strainer or filter after brewing a pot. In other words, leached coffee grinds. Do not use instant or liquid coffee in substrates. Mix coffee in any percentage you want. I've grown on pure coffee. The more items you mix into the substrate, the better. If you have manure, coir, worm castings, compost, coffee grinds, straw, etc., use a little of all of them. Add up to ten percent by volume of gypsum and mix all the dry ingredients. Then, add water to field capacity and pasteurize. RR
