yes, the red shows anything growing really well. I bought the agar like that (Red agar agar bars from asain grocery store), but you could add coloring and it will work the same. I also use blue agar.

for some of you guys that have mycelium on agar, does the mycelium poof up on the agar or does it stay relatively flat?
if anyone has a surface view of the myc on agar that would be nice as Im trying to get some myc off of dried matter right now.

Hope this helps.

I've noticed that Gymnopilus luteofolius mycelium will make a puffy "mat" on the agar. Cubensis mycelium usually stays flat with the agar.
You can see the "crater" in the center of this pic.

It is a plate of Gymnopilus luteofolius. From the crater you can tell the myc is very puffy. The mycelium mat was almost 1/4 inch high off the surface of the agar.
This close up of Ganoderma mycelium shows how flat some species can be.

What species are you attempting to cultivate?

PESH, do you know what this does? (flat or puffy)
that gives me no hope though... I can't easily differentiate between these stupid freaking molds and mycelium...
I've isolated trich and something else (which was very much not white though it did spread out), the trich just kind stayed in 1 small area and greenified.
hopefully I get something that is white and spreads out soon! -.- stupid contaminates and their giant appetites keep eating up my agar before the mycelium...
its like freaking "Oliver" at my house.... the mycelium says "please sir, I'd like some more" contam is like "BEND OVER BITCH, I'll give you some more"

Molds grows a lot faster than most mushroom mycelium.
There are plenty of pictures of cubensis mycelium in this thread. All the "strains" look the same.

Some of mine

I isolated the yeast from the one above and it makes great bread! I have cultured it out several times and keep a master culture of it.

It was my first attempt at agar and I didn't know how to melt it properly i.e. melt it thoroughly and let it cool to the consistency you want it. Instead I partially melted it and then shook the jar to dissipate the heat, but when I poured it, it came out lumpy. Still works though so there was no point in wasting it.

Here is a young Pleurotus djamor (only a few days after transfer) I find djamor to be very wispy at first.

Here is a fully colonized P. djamor

This is a color comparison of the backside of a djamor plate and an empty plate.

Pioppino (Agrocybe aegerita)

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

Psilocybe "cyanofriscosa" From multispore after I believe 3 transfers.

Cheers, -DD

I love how Ganoderma mycelium has that "paper" like texture to it.
