GDI memory leaks in explorer.exe
    #8327558 - 04/25/08 04:15 PM (16 years, 27 days ago)

I hope someone reading this may have come across this issue before, or might know how to track down the cause.

My PC keeps having this issue, sometimes after the PC has been on weeks, more recently it happens every few days. When it happens, the start bar gets drawn at the top of the screen, windows will have no text in them, or icons/text will disappear.

I traced the issue to explorer.exe running out of GDI handles. The issue happens when the number of allocated GDI handles hits 9999. Memory leaks!

It seems that all of the excess handles are bitmaps. I'm able to use a utility called GDIView to see all about it. But all the program does is lists the handles, their handle ID, kernal address, and object type. I'm at a loss as to how to identify what is causing it.

The leaks happen randomly when I'm using the computer. Right now, as I type this post, the number of bitmap handles explorer.exe has, went from 219 to 271. Oh shit, now it's 279. So it seems to happen most when I'm typing.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use the tools I have, to trace this. I've attempted to use windbg, spy++, and a bunch of random tools, to track down the issue. I've also tried closing some applications, all with no noticeable reduction in excess GDI handles. Help!

Time to switch OSes? Nevermind that, I want to know what is causing this issue, or how to find that out, should I ever come across this problem again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help :scaryshroom:
