i.d. help

i found a strange-looking mushroom growing under an oak tree in someones lawn in missouri. i'm pretty sure it's not psychadelic, but i'm just curious because i've never seen a mushroom like it before. it's a dense, heavy, mushroom about the size of your big toe. it doesn't have a stem at all, but just has a more complex than normal root structure. it's white/light brown on the outside. i broke a piece off of it and the entire inside of it was a very dark purple and moist/sticky....sorry, i don't have a picture. thanks
