Fruiting Terrarium Cakes
    #8322892 - 04/24/08 11:56 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys i have a few questions on the Perlite fruiting processes.

I dunked and rolled my cakes, the mycelium colonized correctly and the jars started to pin. And no signs of contamination were evident.

I created a terrarium out of a Rubbermaid container with a loose plastic lid. I put a hands-width worth of very damp Perlite in the bottom as recommended. I drilled a bunch of holes in the box, and my question is, is it possible that i drilled too many holes? Is it supposed to be so humid that fog builds in the terrarium? I have a total of 8 cakes sitting on aluminum foil atop the Perlite. I actually see a primordia off the side of one cake that looks healthy, but it has been 4 days after the birthing process. I am fruiting at room temperature.

Well i will just enumerate some questions:

Is everything going as planned?

Did i drill to many holes? If so i can i tape up the sides of the box to eliminate some of the gas exchange holes?

Should it be more humid?

Should i spray with my bottle once or twice a day, or just as needed?

Is indirect lighting with a florescent bulb adequate?

How does failure occur at this stage, or in other words, how long can the cake sits before you know there goners?

Are you using a hygrometer?
You kinda need one to tell the RH of the FC.

Funny i read, and researched and they never said anything about the hygrometer as a necessity.

Now that i see its importance perhaps i will pick one up. Where is a good place to get one? What should the RH read?

But that still does not answer all the questions?

Yes, it's possible that you've drilled too many holes in your FC, but this can easily be solved by either adding more damp perlite, or taping the holes.

What you want for your mushrooms is a rH between 90 and 99 percent.

100 would mean indeed fog, and this isn't actually possible to maintain, without using a fog machine.
You won't get a hundred percent by using perlite!

But since it's not needed anyway, it's not important

I'd suggest to get yourself a hygrometer to check the rH.
