DNA in early and late life...
    #8322300 - 04/24/08 08:37 AM (16 years, 28 days ago)

Does the DNA of a person change over time?

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a study that has been done on this subject. Perhaps using preserved blood taken when someone was young, and blood from them now?

I'm not an expert in this field, so I could well be wrong with my answer. From what I remember, sections of DNA can move around, much like mixing up the chapters of a book, but the smaller sequences don't change, unless a mutation occurs. Also, the ends of the DNA strands get shorter over time with each copy made.

I would love to hear from people that work in the field and know for certain.

There's talk of designer viruses that can splice DNA into human Cells. Given enough viri, I'm sure the entire human body could reflect this change.
Does this happen in nature? not "Body-wide". Single cells will inevitably mutate however.

This is not uncommon, that's how viruses work, they get the body to process their dna.

As to the original question, yes, dna changes.

The telomeres for one change, shorten, throughout life.

Mutations happen from copying errors and environment.

The actual code itself shouldn't change body wide. these will be mutations in individual cells. Even things like viruses usually only target certain cells.

But the dna is only the tip of the iceberg. Most processes aren't directly a result of the DNA, but rather a regulation of transcription of the DNA. While this process is ultimatly directed by DNA encoded proteins and RNA, mostly, it functions somewhat independantly of direct control from the genome.
