Salvia bill passes state senate April 23, 2008 - abcactionnews.com
TALLAHASSEE, FL. (AP) -- A hallucinogenic herb called Salvia divinorum would be made illegal and put in the same class of controlled substances as marijuana and LSD under a proposal now headed to the governor.
Possessing the herb, which is sold on the Internet, would become a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
The Senate passed a bill criminalizing the substance Wednesday, and it had already passed the House.
Native to Mexico and still grown there, Salvia divinorum is a hallucinogen and generally smoked but can also be chewed or made into a tea and drunk. Unlike hallucinogens like LSD or PCP, however, its effects last for a shorter time, generally up to an hour.
Though there is little data on how widespread the herb's use is, lawmakers said they were increasingly worried about children buying it online. A number of states have already placed restrictions on it and others are considering doing so.
The bill (HB 1363) passed 39-0 and now goes to the governor.

Possession within 1,000 feet of a school, park, church, convience store, and public housing will be a 2nd degree felony (15 year maximum).
The sentencing level and guidelines in Florida for possession of Salvia or Salvinorin A are equal to Possession of cocaine or crack cocaine (same guidelines).

It would save the legislature a billion man-hours if they would just declare all of nature to be illegal and be done with it.
Remember that ALL deadly poisonous mushrooms and plants and dangerous deleriants (such as Jimson weed) are legal, but the relatively innocuous reality-shifting plants and fungi are illegal.
This is your government at wrok.

I'm still confused. The only reason I see that they give for banning it is that "kids might buy it on the internet!".... What the hell is up with that? If you're taking away my freedom at least give me a fucking reason

The real reason for this legislation is youtube and the kids that got high on salvia and posted videos of themselves inebriated.

The good news is that there are dozens of horticultural salvias grown around the world.
Get a live cutting and grow your own and no one will be the wiser.

Thats fucking bullshit. I guess the DEA will soon bust into my yard and confiscate my wimpy, yet terribly dangerous plant.
"But.. but... think of the children!" The ones that somehow have access to credit cards and can make online purchases..
Seems like that should be a parental problem, not the state's problem.
