Is PCI Express backwards compatible with PCI?

E.G.

Placing a PCI Express video card into a PCI slot.

im not positive... but

my guess is no, seeing as PCI video cards were a generation before AGP, which started comin into play by 2000. PCI being before that... long time ago.... (in computer technology time that is)

anyone else?

No, the cards physically wont fit if you try to interchange them.

Yeah, I should have known that.

I'm having trouble here... my neighbor has this motherboard

http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/FIC/105552/105552sp23.shtml

(Foxconn C51GU01 Motherboard [Part #105552])

And he got a GeForce 7900 GS, but it is not being detected in XP.

This is racking my brain. I know it works because I put it in my computer, and the fan spins up on the card so it's getting power.

I also know it is compatible with the mobo because there are some people on random forums that say that have the combo.

I'm starting to think the actual PCIe slot is fried. I tried my GeForce 7300 GT, and it wasn't detected either.
