NAT based routers - any ideas?
    #8318776 - 04/23/08 01:25 PM (16 years, 29 days ago)

I'm in the market for a NAT based router. I'm not too big on software that calls itself a "firewall" so I'm looking for an actual firewall.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience and/or could recommend a good brand/manufacturer.

Thanks,
Lana

How simple/complex do you want to get? On the simple end are 'web safe routers' and on the complex end are things like the cisco pix. Price usually follows complexity, with the simple stuff being cheaper.

VPN is another consideration. Almost all hardware firewalls permit VPN passthrough, but only the expensive ones support VPN endpoints.

You can also do it yourself, with a spare computer, two ethernet cards, and linux.

I've read white papers on how to hook up an older machine as a good router. I'd like to do it, I'd be pushing myself into linux which I've been wanting to do for years.

The thing is time.

I'd love to do it, but I'm just too busy. Sad excuse, but its true.

So I'm looking for a stand alone, out of the box, some what simple package. I'm only using this on 5 computers, nothing major. A newer, but cheaper cisco pix would be nice.

Thanks Seuss!

Personally, I don't like the PIX 'cause it is too damn difficult to program. On the flip side, you can make it do about anything you need (except serve DHCP).

Both netopia and sonicwall make decent products that won't cost an arm and half a leg.

The next step down would be a 'web safe router' type of product... pretty much everybody has a version of this... linksys, dlink (avoid), etc...
