Video Conversion

I have some dvd's that I have ripped in ISO format. I want to turn these into .avi files of good quality, i've seen movies in the 700mb-1gb range that were really good quality, using the x264 codec and using .avi container.
What would be the best program to use to do this? I would like something open source and has ease of use. I have nero 8 ultimate edition, which I am sure can do it, but maybe there is something better. I have also used 3gp converter to convert full resolution movies for my psp. Now I downloaded 3gp all set up and ready to go, so I don't know how to set the config files to do the resolution that I want, which is best with good sound around 1gb.
Any tips are great...thanks

I don't know about best, but I use VLC. Use the export wizard and follow the prompts.

Use the export wizard of VLC and follow the prompts. It is free and easy and will do what you asked.

cool, i like how vlc seems so simple yet does so much. It does what I wanted, but I'm really looking for an encoder with more options. I have been reading around and it seems that x264 is actually the encoder, using the h264 codec, and is one of the best if not the best, but it is command line only, and with the slew of options, pretty tough to understand. Now I have also found something called MeGUI, which is a gui for it, and even it has so many options it is confusing, so I'm going to do some more reading and see what I can figure out about these.
But from looking on some video enthusiast sites, MeGUI + x264 seem to be the best.
