Need Oil type advice
    #8307441 - 04/20/08 09:51 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I'd like to buy a bottle of oil for my PC fans finaly. Tired of having fans fail on me all the time. From what i've read, silicone based oil is the best. Now I don't know much about oils, so I have no idea where to find this. The only thing i could think of is AirSoft gun stores, but there's none closeby to me. Anyone have any idea where I could come across silicone based oil? What markets use this stuff?

I did check a bike shop, but they have teflon based oil. I have no idea if this is good for PC fans. It needs to be a light oil that does not gum up after a while (especialy at high temperatures). From reading around, i know that mineral oil is not the best stuff to use, even tho it's recommended by those that are misinformed.
So anyone ever work with teflon based oil? Would you advise against it?

I honestly think I would buy new fans before oiling old ones, at least in a computer.

http://www.amazon.com/Airsoft-Ultra-Light-Weight-Silicone-Oil/dp/B000AY894A

Made for pellet guns, but should meet the specifications you provided.

They also use silicon oil for fishing reels.  Any sporting goods stores in your area?

There might be, I'll check around. Thanks for the link + idea.
As for buying new fans, I've read that just one drop will increase fan life dramaticaly. I'm thinking that an 8$ bottle of oil is worth it, considering simple fans are 5-10$ here each. A lot of times, my fans still work, they just make that irritating buzzing, or grinding sound which oiling seems to fix.
