New pope was in Hitler's Youth
    #4197784 - 05/19/05 10:57 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

...I just found out about this. I mean I knew the dude was German, but apparently he was actually in Hitler's Youth at the age of 14, and helped in the persecution of Jews.

...Not that I give 2 shits about religion, but god damn.

To be fair, most young men of his age living in Germany at the time were forcefully conscripted into the Hitler Youth. The spreading of this information reeks of MISinformation across the internet far and wide.

its still pretty ironic that the Pope was in Hitler's Youth, wether he was forced into it or not.

Especially since he really does bare a resemblence to Senator Palpatine.

I think the Catholic church has gone to the Dark Side.  :crazy2:

Who cares? If I were drafted right now that doesn't mean I'd start sucking Uncle Sam's cock and persecuting people on a racial basis...

I think we should worry less about his interest in Hitler, and more in his interest in Youth.

Ka-bing.

he was also a soldier manning an anti aircraft gun during the war. though i think he deserted before he acually fired the thing.

i tend to think, though, that his outdated and conservative views about women, contraception and homosexuality are much more of a concern than his hitler youth past. it seems very unlikely that he wil be a "progressive" pope, unfortunately. still, he is old and maybe he wont last long.

it's not the same as present times where you can dodge any sort of draft whatsoever by moving to so and so place and saying "stick it to the man"...

during the time ratzinger was in Hitler's youth, it was OBLIGATORY to be in it. If you or your family objected to join, then obviously the sentence would be death for everyone. he was conscripted to be in an anti aircraft unit, again, something he had no control over.

ratzinger and his family didn't support the nazi party, they were against national socialism. in his autobiography it even says that their family had to move 4 times due to their father's disbelief in the third reich.

the majority of the german people didn't know what the nazi party was really doing. they were unaware of all the medical tests, the mass killings...they had really no choice but to listen to all the propaganda the nazi party were saying. of course, if you were to object, then you'd be hung or shot and your family would feel the consequences too.

funny enough a few of my german friends have told me how their grandparents were forced to join hitler's youth and they actually enjoyed their time due to singing songs and playing in youth activities...of course, they didn't know what was really going on at that age.

Come on, I'm as upset with the state of American politics and ideals as you are but comments like this seem pretty counterproductive. Even if there was a draft, it would be a lot easier to dodge then the goddamn Hitler Youth. I'm sorry, but 1935 Germany and 2005 America are not comparable. Refusing to join the Hitler Youth could have gotten you beaten and killed. Refusing to join a draft would get you put in a conscientious observer's prison doing minor manual labor.

Just because he was in the hitler youth doesn't mean that he had anything to do with the SS or Gestapo

It's his fifth post.

We'll let it slide.

This time.

That looks like my old dog. He would love for you to throw the frisbee but could never catch it. It would invariably just knock him right in the nose.

What a stupid animal he was, but the best dog I ever had.

if you want to trash the pope, by all means do so, but to trash on him for this is pretty ridiculous.
