Suggestions on a microscope
    #8279352 - 04/13/08 08:10 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Looking for suggestions on a microscope that is fairly cheap, yet good enough for identifications. Also how do you get images from a microscope on to a computer? I am interested in taking hunting to the next level. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Mods if you think this needs to be moved feel free to. I just thought the hunting community would have the best input on this. Thanxs in advance for everyones suggestions.

1) Nikon Labophot - try E-Bay. Need a trinocular head.
2) Webcam
N.B.

Here is an example of an image I took with the above setup.

Well I picked up a microscope on e-bay for $90 and built the camera.

Here is a link to the thread where I posted the pictures of the camera as well as picture I took with it.
I paid about $35 on e-bay for the microscope in the thread

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5847823/an/0/page/3

So you can get a "Lab Grade" microscope on e-bay cheap and make the camera for around $20

Hope this helps.

I never knew you could get such nice pictures with a webcam for micro shots! I've been thinking of getting a microscope, and since the new hunting season is coming around (still DAMN snow on the ground) I was planning on buying some cheap wallmart/sears type, but i decided against that. But now that i can see all you need is a webcam for nice shots like that, i may just try my luck on a cheapish one. But I suppose that Nikon is far from cheap . So whats the verdict on those cheap 30$ ones from wallmart/sears for kids to toy around with? any use for checking out spores? i'm guessing they wouldn't have the micrometer scales on them... or is it nanometers? Thanks a bunch, peace

Also get the David Largent book about microscopic features of mushrooms. Good luck, a microscope will really advance your understanding of mushrooms.

Take a look at http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8016240

I like the one I have but if I was going to do it over again I would try the one Workman has.

Sometimes they come up on craigslist. There they are usually either way too cheap or way too expensive.
