Question about PA&L
    #8291763 - 04/16/08 02:43 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Why is there only one active moderator who is a batshit-insane Republican? How about a counter-balance?

Why post this here and not Website Announcements and Feedback if you're serious about the matter?

Anyways, it doesn't matter because the forum rarely needs moderation and any issue that does need moderated has no relevance to the political views of the moderator. Such a "counter-balance" means absolutely nothing to the actual moderation of the board.

In all seriousness, I think it would do well to balance out the forum.

Actually it was fw_g. Your point that it would "balance out the forum" makes no sense. How does having an active liberal and a conservative moderator effect banning people for flaming? :strokebeard:

> Why is there only one active moderator who is a batshit-insane Republican? How about a counter-balance?

We used to have fireworks_god in there to help keep a balance, but the bitch decided it was more fun NOT being a moderator.

The problem is that it is difficult to find a left leaning moderator that is both not batshit-insane and willing to moderator the forum.  There are a few people (such as johnm214) that I keep an eye on as potential moderators, but I don't think any of them are overly left leaning.  Do you have a recommendation in mind?

> Such a "counter-balance" means absolutely nothing to the actual moderation of the board.

You are correct.  Of course, you should know as you used to be a moderator in the forum.

At this point anyone who bans Luddite would be a pretty decent mod. He has like 5 puppets and spams the hell out of the forum. Quite annoying.

Doh!  I thought we had you in PA&L as well, for the same reason.  Oh well, I'm gonna chalk this one up to too much smoke (or not enough smoke...)

Political discussion. I think it is French. (j/k)

The forum used to be called "Politics, Activism, and Law", but was recently renamed to just Political Discussion.

lulz.

I agree with whoever said there isn't a need for another moderator.

I may think Phred is a jack-booted thug, but he manages his moderator duties in a competent and un-biased fashion.

Since the majority of the people in Politics are reasonably intelligent there isn't as much blatant stupidity and flaming as there are in some other forums. And Phred is around enough that things are taken care of in a timely fashion.

Phred is awesome, he is the counter balance. Otherwise all the liberals would just have wank off circles pumping up their own self-importance making wild claims that could never be substantiated.

I nominate annapurna for moderator.  he/she would be a great counter balance

but seriously, I agree that counterbalance isn't needed.  Moderators shouldn't confuse their duties w/ their ideology, but other than that, who cares what they say about non-moderator stuff? They, and the administrators are just other folks w/ ideas.

And though I've tangeled w/ phred a few times, and disagree w/ him pretty strongly on many things, he's definatly a fair guy.  He doesn't ban or warn out of anger and doesn't mix his beliefs and duties as a mod.

Thanks for the props too seuss

After looking at the global warming thread it's quite clear that Phred wont separate his mod powers from the debate. If anything, this clearly shows the need for another mod on the left to balance this quack. Supernovasky would be my vote.

Also I don't know if anyone else has noticed but he is very lenient on right-wing flamers...

Just stop.

Because he's a MOD he's not allowed to express an opinion? Get out of town. Is he banning people for expressing a contrary opinion? Is he deleting posts to prevent the same?

I don't think so.

This whole global warming thing is something he feels very strongly about, he always has. It has absolutely zilch to do with his mod-ship.

Quit Whining.

yeah, how has he impacted the global warming debate at all? He threatened to close it, which I disagree with, but the thread was off topic. And in fact he didn't close it.

As for the right wing flamers, I don't think there's any bias. We have more nasty comments from the right side, but I believe he tolerates both sides evenly.

Hell, he's banned luddite a few times, and that should get him a medal.

Another thing. Political forums shouldn't be used to constantly bash the USA, Bush, Cheney and/or Republicans or for constantly posting conspiracy theories and other racist/communist/terrorist lies. All threads and posts like that should be deleted and the poster banned.

Actually Republicans should be allowed to eat mushrooms.

But any republican that eats mushrooms and remains a republican is doing it wrong.

Luddite's a racist tool, but he just likes to cause commotion.

He's just like a goth kid who gets a kick out of acting weird and insane. He loves to feel like he's courageously countering the conventional wisdom. I don't know if he believes half the shit he says.

He shouldn't be banned immediatly, just given warnings when he trolls, and if he doesn't stop, escalate the ban periods.
