Highest File Compression?
    #8291632 - 04/16/08 01:41 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

So I've heard that 7Zip has the highest file compression ratio. But I cannot for the life of my figure out the damn settings. I've seen some awesomely compressed files, like a CD Image, 735mb, compressed down to 34.5mb rar file! That's nearly a 21:1 compression ratio!!

How can I do this?

The best compression will depend on the type of data, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_compression#Comparative. The compression ratio you're talking about is only possible if there's lots of redundant data in the file or if lossy compression is used, there's no magic algorithm.

k, the file I'm trying to compress is an avi. In avi format, it's 174mb, and no matter what I try to compress it with (7Zip, WinAce, WinRar, WinZip) and what settings, the best I can get is 170mb.

Any idea?

That's because your "avi" is most certainly a divx or xvid video file muxed with some mp3 or acc audio stream, meaning it's already highly compressed. Unless you explicitly reencode this movie in lower quality (that would be equivalent to a lossful compression) there's no way you can attain a ratio much better than 1:1 with a lossless compression algorithm like the one used by 7zip or rar.

yeah AVI isnt a format just a file extension. it is most likely a already compressed file most AVI files are already compressed. i try to stick with tar.gz if you haven't tried it yet

Kind of like saying mpeg is just a bunch of letters.

AVI is a container for digital media used to multiplex digital video and digital audio into a single stream.

Usually, the digital media contained by the AVI container has already been highly compressed.  The added bulk of the AVI container gives compression software a little to work with, but in the end it really isn't worth the effort.
