ID Request: Yellow Morel?
    #8283046 - 04/14/08 04:53 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Habitat: Wood - Found in deciduous woods on the floor of the woods. Dead woods and leaves. Some fresh grass. Right next to the creek. One was actually on the cliff at the top where I could just reach it.

Gills: Yellow with morel-esque pores.

Stem: yellowish white with a few brown steaks on one. Hollow

Cap: Yellowish brown with irregular pores. Ovalish. 2 inches tall (picked early I believe)

Bruising: Greyish as the air gets to it.

Location: Kansas - Midwestern Deciduous forest.

Now for the pr0n pictures:

I can't believe anyone hasn't answered yet on morels. I guess they are a bigger deal here than in most places. I know that there are a bunch of people from here and into Missouri that are BIG into hunting them.

Yea, it appears to be a morel to me... But i would wait for someone with more experience with them to confirm it. Oh and next time i would break off at the base of the stem and not pull them completely out of the ground.

Sweet nector. Thanks for the reply. Next time we go a hunting we will not pull it all out.

How long can I keep these bad boys without them spoiling? Can I keep them fresh for a day or do I need to dry them out now. I think the clock is ticking. I want to eat them so I hope someone posts soon. Otherwise I will have to eat them after dehydration. I think it would be better fresh the first time.

Morchella esculenta, my favorite species of the morels.

They should be ok for up to a week.

Thanks you sir! I was 99.9998% sure it was. But I didn't want to get the deadly lookalike. I don't think we even have those....and all the lookalikes I had seen looked only remotely like them. Not really close at all. So thank you for the confirmation.

You're the man!

Wow Matits! Exciting, the season is just beginning here. I found around ten M. semilibera pins today in one of my least reliable spots, tomorrow I'll try to take some pictures and maybe venture out a bit further into yellow territory.
Excellent finds, beautiful colors!

Nice. We are going out again tomorrow too. We are going back to that spot if we have no luck, and we have a couple other places to look. Let me know if you find anything really exciting.

I am hoping to find a crap ton tomorrow, but you know how that goes, go in expecting, come out with nothing.

It should be a good day outside anyways, so all in all a good time.

I may take some cigars out with us tomorrow to enjoy while sequestered in the woods.

Yep, that's a White Morel of the above mentioned species. You can keep it in a paper bag in the fridge up to a week( although they never have a chance to last that long with me.) Or, you can dry them out and put them in a air tight container, keep away from intense light and keep them for a long time with very little loss of flavor. I like them in risotto. Reconstitute them in a little bit of chicken broth. Personally, I used to find them all over back up in Alaska but I've never came across any Whites in W.Va. I know they are here, I just don't know where. Really nice find, you lucky son of a gun!!!

Thank you sir. I know I am. My buddy and I went out hunting. I thought it would be a good day for mushies and the weather was beautiful. So I thought a hike was in order since I don't get out much. Was beautiful and walked next to the creek stopping to look at EVERYTHING fungi.

I told my buddy to go one way and look, and then I went another (we had 2-way 8mile range radios) and he kept seeing little slimes and the like.

I kept walking listening to my mp3 player and I saw one and was like, "HOLY SHIT! DUDE I THINK I FOUND A MOREL. He was like like, "NO SHIT! Where are you?"

It was awesome. I have read up a lot and have researched morels and all that so I knew what I was looking for. So when we found one I showed him and he was able to find about 3. I found the rest. The one in the pics of the 2 together... I found. I was so F'in excited over it. I have never really ever been successful at the mushroom hunting before.

They were either past due or non-edible or growing and then all the sudden when they get about a centimeter they dried up and died for whatever reason. We are going back out today after I take the boys to get their shots (my dogs). One is a beagle and the other is a king charles cavalier spaniel.

The latter is my moms dog but he is like my "other" son.

He always comes to wake me up in the morning to say hello. He runs in jumps up and lays on my chest licking me. Then runs off to get a drink and go outside.

He is a shit but I love him.

Maybe I can train my stubborned ass beagle to smell for mushrooms. GOOD BOY!

Beagle = very sensitive nose = good drug and bomb dogs = bountiful Gian harvest.

Oh and the hunting spot. We have never been there before looking, I just though, hey you own that.

I was being facetious.

Of course I love blewits and oysters, and I haven't yet had boletes, but WILL this year. I had some great looking ones last year but never ID'ed them, so I tossed them. I think they were good ones though. One of them was kinda greyish flesh and the other was bright yellow inside and stained everything it touched. Neither had red pores, and they stained blue, but it faded away pretty completely and only stained blue around the pore area. One was maroonish colored and reticulated or netlike on the stem, and I think I saw that as being a choice bolete. I just never got a proper ID, so I didn't risk it.

This season, I'm on the lookout for good edibles I missed last season. I had chants last year that ROCKED too.

I just wanna find morels to munch. I'm not disappointed with what I find here.

Does the shroomery ever have get togethers where everyone meets up and goes hunting for mushrooms in different areas. That would be a cool ass thing to do. For people who can't get the local have places to go hunting around the US.

Then again that would get REALLY REALLY expensive really fast. I like you guys and all, just don't want to spend my ONLY vacation with everyone. Ha ha ha.

I hardly get one anyways.
