are their any agar formulas that dont require agar?

I mean can you get similar results by using gelatin and a nutrient ritch liquid?

gelatine doesn't work, the mycelium digests it into goo. You could try any kind of flour paste, mixed to a pourable consistency and PC'ed.
I used to use wheat flour paste with acceptable results, but after trying agar I'd never go back.
You can get cheap agar-agar powder in most health food stores for cheap, so unless getting agar is impossible I'd recommend going for that.

I thought I read somewhere that agar agar won't work because it's not nutritious. Any validity to this?!?!

which is why agar formulas contain added nutrients eg malt extract, dextrose, yeast, potato or a mix of several.

Agar agar is only the base. You still need to add nutrients. Check out these recipes.

Damn... I guess a trip to the health food store (1hr) is better than waiting for agar in the mail...

I've used prepared bacterialogical grade PDA and home made PDA, and they both work well. In fact, the only advantage that I have seen with the prepared PDA was the end clarity of the agar mixture.

Ok so I made the trip and got some agar, 2 oz worth.
I also got Wheat Gluten, some fresh ground wheat flower and some natural honey.

What about using beer in the mix? I plan on doing this all tomorrow and if nobody tells me its a BAD idea Ima gona try using 1/2 dark beer with active yeasts and 1/2 wates also just an all beer method with B+ spores....

Anyone try using beer as liqued before?

Haven't you ever heard anyone refer to beer as liquid bread before?

That's a common german saying. Ahhh thank god for Oktoberfest, only place where being drunk on carnival rides, puking, and then eating some sausage isn't just for overweight middleaged men.
