Need a little help with sterilizing time please!
    #828426 - 08/19/02 04:27 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys, well, I've been sterilizing stuff for a while, but I keep reading on different places/diffrent post about different sterilizing times. I need to know please, what is the optimal amount of time to sterilize say 16 Pints in a 22qt pressuer cooker, stacked on top of each other.
Thanks!

Wow, I used to do them at 1hr +, but I read in several places that 20 minutes at 15 psi. was enough, so I started doing it that way, but also began to have more contams.

A problem that came up when i did them for 1 hr. is that they looked a bit burnt..... Does my substrate need more water?

My canner came with a rack to put the jars on top of. I use this on the bottom. Do I still need to put some towels at the bottom?

What if I wrap them with foil, will that help them not get so burnt? Or will that make it worst?

Thank You.

Ohh... one more thing...... Is that 1hr from the time that it reaches 15 psi ???

I do 1 hour at 15 psi...
Becuase I like to fuck later in the process, and learn from it... Then spend all my time preparing substrate that contams...

Well I'm goin to start doing them for 1 hr again just to be safe...

Any thoughts on why my substrate looks too burnt?
Should I add more water to it?

How much ratio of water do you use for 1 hr sterilization

Shroom Hermit and Gnome69?

(fort regular rice and verm)

For grains your gonna wanna sterilized for 45 min to an hour at 15 psi. If you are using rice then you'll be safe with the 20 - 30 min

Your substrate looks burnt because you left it in too long.

DUH!

You only need 20 minutes...if that. I know people who don't even sterilize things, they just work cleanly and still have good results.

>How much ratio of water do you use for 1 hr sterilization

Captain Max you know what that kind of a reply can do to some newbies out there.
You`re going to get confused cultivaters all over the world not sterilising a damn thing thinking they`re all clean and getting jar after jar of contamination.
Primarily sterilisation is very important to firstly ensure clean substrates and then secondly to corner your contamination, ensure no contams are in your substrate you`re one step closer to mushrooms.

I pressure cook my half pint jars for 20 minutes and have had no contamination. They are standard PF tek brf and vermiculite. I also was wondering what cooking them longer would do to the water content. There's not an exact amount of water to use though. I used 50 ml in some jars and 60 ml in others. They all colonized, but the 50 cc were a bit quicker because there was less condensation on the sides and water on the bottom. They all fruited pretty much equally after dunking. I think too little water wouldn't be as bad as too much as long as the jars fully colonize because you can always dunk cakes before birthing to replace the water. And a casing should replace the water too. Contamination is more likely in casings and cakes that are too wet.

Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.
