Does the Devil exist?
    #8279558 - 04/13/08 08:56 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

So I've noticed a rather large number of posts questioning God's existence, but nary a post questioning the existence of his polar opposite, the Devil. (Be it the traditional Satan from Judeo-Christianity, Iblis from Islam, etc...) Why do (or don't) you believe in the Devil?
So how 'bout it... does the Lord of Flies exist?
You may choose only one

Judaistic scriptures never once mention the devil and early Chirstian scriptures do not mention it either, the devil was first introduced to man by the vatican in the 5 century B.C.E. How bout them apples

Personally I don't think there is a Devil.

I think theres 2 reasons why the "Devil" was created.

1. To explain things that are bad. "if God made the world why do all of these bad things happen?" person answers "the Devil is responsible for those bad things."

2. To scare people into joining some kind of organized religion. "if you don't accept Jesus as your lord and savior then the Devil will get your soul when you die!"

I had a discussion about Satan with one of those strangers who strikes up a conversation with you so they can get to the preaching as quickly as possible.  This guy's topic was the Apocalypse, and how it began in 1918 and was still going on.

Anyway, as we talked it suddenly occurred to me that the Devil would HAVE TO be smarter than I am, and it was pretty stupidly obvious to me that to fight God would be a losing proposition for anyone.  So I asked him why the Devil would do something so stupid.  He didn't have much of an answer, but it did get me thinking.

The Devil is about Vanity.  The only reason Lucifer could do so manifestly stupid and self-destructive a thing is not because he could win, but because he liked the way having a third of heaven's angels believing he could win made him feel about himself.  Even though they were wrong, those angels believed Lucifer was better than God, and with a simple act of denial, he could believe it too.  And the end result is tragedy for Lucifer.

No, I don't think the Morning Star is a real guy.  But it's a good story about facing things for what they are, and not letting pride blind you to what's real.

How so? More importantly why do I need to choose one or the other.

LOL... there's no reason why you have to choose one or the other, but complete and utter agnosticism is a tad irrational. Why? Well, it's true that you can't prove or disprove the existence of God. At the same time, it's true that you can't prove or disprove the existence of an invisible flying spaghetti monster, or an imaginary pink unicorn (to take the example of the leading anti-intelligent design arguments).

You can't prove or disprove the existence of these beings either way, but it's damn more improbable that the flying spaghetti monster exists than that it doesn't.

The Devil works great as a metaphor for the dysfunctional aspects of human nature

Should never have been taken literally

I hear ya, I guess what I was saying was I just choose not to even concern myself with such thing. Although the flying spaghetti monster is 100% real...he saved me.
