Quick question on Casings/Fruiting
    #8278624 - 04/13/08 07:19 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Heres the scenario, A guy has a mono tub that has 3 inches of colonized substrate (wheat straw and organic compost/ cow manure) and cased it with the 50/50+ casing mix, about 1/2 a inch of casing. Also the temp is 78 degrees where the tub is sitting It's confined to the dark and no fae. Any way on Thursday the said tub was cased and on Friday it was checked and there were about 4 quarter sized areas of mycelia that had penetrated the casing layer. I have read Hyphes pinning strategy and decided to patch and wait for the mycelia to equally penetrate the casing layer for a even pin set. Well the casing was checked again today which is day 3 and there were about three little specs of mycelia breaking through and what appears to be a rather large pin. My question is should i go ahead and fruit this casing even though there is very little mycelia visible ? Or would it be more beneficial to just patch these areas and allow more time so i have even mycelia breaking through which will give me a better pin set ? I just wanted to see what some of the veterans had to say and thanks for the help.

If it's already pinning, then you likely don't wanna patch anymore. but i doubt you have pins 3 days after casing.

You should break up your posts too, that was hard to follow.

i just kinda got lost between the lines. some spacing would've helped.

Let us know how it works out.

Paragraphs are nice to use sometimes when writing!

50/50 what casing? If using coir it is going to grow through because the coir is food. You could patch with pure vermiculite, or verm that has been made alkaline, I suppose.

It is possible that you have pins after three days if your culture was well into forming hyphal knots when you cased it. If it is just a few pins you might want to pick them off since these early birds will be out of sync with the rest of your flush, and it is best to have uniform fruiting as much as possible.
