Swearing on the Bible
    #827347 - 08/19/02 06:43 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Pardon my meandering rant, but this post from Ped got me thinking:

"Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"
"Yes."
"Place your hand on the Bible, sir."
"Oh shit, I didn't realize there was a Bible involved. I guess I can't lie now."

Separation of Church and State in the US of A - uh huh. Do Congressmen also swear on the Bible when being inaugurated?

How many people do you think tell the truth when it will condemn them or hurt their case because of Bible-swearing? Almost zero? People will look out for #1, morals be damned, and will do and say whatever they can to get off - even *gasp* church-going Christians.

Ever notice how almost no one repents until they get caught, then the "I'm sorry." act starts. But not always...

There was a case a few years ago where a guy had brutally raped and murdered a young woman. (Guess it is hard to gently rape and murder, but I digress...)The man was convicted and when it came time for sentencing, the judge asked if the man felt any remorse. "FUCK YOU!" he shouted belligerently. The courtroom and the judge were shocked. Well, the indignant judge gave the murderer the maximum sentence for his outburst (like his words were somehow worse than his actions). If the man had apologized he might have had a chance for parole in 20 years instead of 2 life sentences (Whatever the hell that means! Will they incarcerate you when you reincarnate?)

Hey at least the murderer wasn't a damn phoney.

Would you religious types lie to save your bacon after swearing on the Bible? Come on, be honest now.

I would swear on the Bible any day, hell I'll do it now: *places Bible in front of self and yells "fuck you, I'm swearing on you bitch", as little drops of spit and left over dinner bits in teeth fly out and land on cover*

Not to stray off topic or anything... but I learned today that in the 1500s or so in England, when one was caught for petty crimes, they would be branded with a T for thief or R for rogue..on the palm of their right hand on the meat of the thumb. Then started the tradition of swearing someone in..where one raises their right hand before testimony. A previous felon would be recognized by a brand on their hand.

If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure the President swears on the Bible when they are inaugurated.

Yeah the entire swearing on a bible thing is off...

What does this have to do with philosophy and spirituality?

1. The separation of Church and state is unconstitutional. But this isn't the political forum.

2. I have never lied under oath and it cost me plenty. I lost a custody battle to my ex and her lover who both committed murder and after I lost the case the murderer brutally sexually molested my daughter. All preventable if I just would have lied. If I knew what the outcome would have been before the case would I have lied to save her? You bet your life I would. Just as Sarah deceived the king and told him that she was Abraham's sister*.

The oath I took was as follows:

"You do swear by almighty God, searcher of all hearts, that the testimony which you shall give the court, in the issue now trying, shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and that you shall answer to God on that last great day?"

3. Would I lie to save my skin?

Never.

*Abraham's idea

Cheers,

What does this have to do with philosophy and spirituality?

Morality is certainly a spiritual issue. As per usual, my guess is that perjury would be the same among believers and non-believers alike - in general. People can and will rationalize anything, regardless of religious stance.

Guess I never got the chance!

BTW, excellent thread.

Let's flush the hypocrites out of the bush together! I think we make a good team.

Yikes, that is an horrific story. I have made pretty clear my non-violent position, yet I don't know if I could let the bastard take another breath after what he did to your child.

You have no idea. Maybe I'll tell you about it sometime.

Thanks for the sentiment, bro.
