yeah i know the institute is the only legitimate source to BUY them, which is why i was hoping i could find someone to trade with

which is retarded......  i dont understand how an institute can "patent" the right to exclusively sell a wild plant strain......

I thank its a cross. So, it's better to start with new seeds each year. If I get any fruits, I will save some seeds...

My Scotch Bonnets and Capsicum annuum 'Jamaican Yellow' came from Ricthers Herbs

it works like this:

say a pesticide or seed company comes out with a new product, they patent it and are given anywhere from 3-10 years, depending on the product and patent applied for, to which they have all rights to; then after that time period, the information becomes available to the public and other seed companies can then make those crosses themselves (or try to), if successful, they can then sell them.  this is part of why there is ongoing research, cause you have a few years to make a lot of money and then the profits drop with the old product

If a company/person is smart, they won't put all the info in the patent..Like, the guy they owns a patent on inside growing of Morel Mushrooms..He didn't put all the info in the patent..

Just buy the dill in a peat pot.  Then you won't have the transplant shock.  Bonnie Plants sells alot of their stuff (especially herbs) that way.

Finally got someone to till my garden spot. :monkeydance: It's not huge but will do for this year.  It's about 10' x 20'.  I found of list for companion planting and got everything planted except for the corn (will this week) and tomatoes, which I'll wait til about the middle of May.  I swear by waiting for blackberry winter (the cold snap when the blackberries bloom) to plant anything that frost will kill.  I might be about a week later than other people but it hasn't failed my yet.

I already have the peppers in but they are small and I can cover them if necessary.

Got a couple of herbs to try this year too.  Cilantro which I love and bee balm.  I know a couple of years ago I went looking for this plant.  I can't remember why, it must have some healing properties.  So I'll be looking up why I wanted it.  Wish I had a camera to show y'all some pics.  Although right now it looks more like dirt than anything.

that's okay.  i talked to my landlord a few hours ago and asked him what i could tear up in the backyard; he said, "tear up whatever you want. you're giving me tomatoes, right?"

once it gets dry again, i'm ripping up all the grass around the beds within a foot and all in the middle

i'm going to try to use these limbs from a bigger limb that fell (almost on me) the other afternoon. they are about 12 feet long and have forks at the end. thinking that will be perfect to hang some rope fencing/trellis (hemp or twine, whatever's cheaper/available) for the tomatoes, as opposed to staking/caging them

the little half bed will be a few pumpkin vines, the bed behind it will be zucchini or butternut, still haven't decided

this bed will be pumpkin

sorry for the blurry pictures

Have you grown pumpkins before Demius?

I ask because I thought they were quite the winding vine and worry whether you have given yourself enough room for them. I have thought about trying some melons myself but am worried about time and space. I prefer to have my smaller garden and keep it in good shape than let everything get out of hand. With the little ones around I don't have a huge amount of time I can work it.

You must own your own garden tiller. It's on my list of things to get.

no i haven't. this is actually my first real attempt at gardening with very little (and pretty much poor) experience prior. i'm not too worried about them winding everywhere, because there will be a good amount of distance from them and the other squash in the bed right next to them (and the larger bed should be fine). i ordered a smaller variety for pies, and don't plan on putting more than 2 in the small bed and 4 in the larger one...and i'm not too worried if the garden gets messy, so long as it provides

and no, i don't own a tiller, all of that work was done with a shovel, and some of it with a hoe; yep, i dug out all those beds, sifted through the dirt removing all the weeds and weed seed i could (have more to do over the next few days) and then mixed it back in with the compost/sand

hopefully i'll have more pictures tonite of the completed beds, but i have another yard i need to mow and a friend's garden to tend to (and see what he needs me to do) while he and his wife are out of town next week
