Bay Area Pan Subbs
    #8271174 - 04/11/08 08:01 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Yes, they do grow in the Bay Area.  These were found today in newly-laid sod.  They all displayed bluing at the base of the stem - although it doesn't show up well in the images.

Here's a pin for snorkeler.

I've found them in SF and in Berkeley, although I'm sure they grow on new sod throughout the entire Bay Area.

What do you mean by "sod" and why do you say so, seeing as the ones above were collected from grass?? Have other collections been from sod?

Oh hell yeah, that shit is like a subb mat rather than a grass mat. I wish I knew of some new housing developments nearby, they've always got those down to make new lawns. Watch out for the Panaeolopsis too, they like it too.

Ahh panaeolopsis? I have about 5 grams of them dry. I wonder if anyone in the world has dosed them... Anyways. They are a late spring and summer mushroom. I find them fruiting in southern california from may to late july on lawns. They will usually grow with subbs in sodded lawns and sometimes in older lawns but not re-appearing in the same places. They seem to need less nutrients than subbs do to fruit..

Heres some I found 2 weeks ago.

They were found in a patch of subbs.

And some from the last two years.

It appears you have some Galeropsis in there as well. I sent Workman two basidiomes, one of the more long, egg-shaped caps, and one of the smaller, round, balloon-shaped caps. The latter turned out to be Galeropsis, another species with bluing mycelium. It is probably active.
Despite the name Galeropsis, it is probably not poisonous. Remember too, that the bluing Psilocybe and Galerina are some what close relatives.
