Is there a simple way that one would be able to transfer the image currently displayed on their computer to their TV set? Is it as simple as buying the proper cable or is there more to it?

Yeah, you have to buy a special cable for it. I don't remember what the name of the type of cable that you need off hand. Also you need a graphics card which supports it.
You usually have to do some screwing around in Display Properties to get it set up correctly as well. I don't think you can just plug it in and bam there it is on the screen.

Depends on what kind of TV.
Newer LCD's and plasmas usually have a VGA/RGB input. Then its just a simple DB-15 VGA cable. If it doesnt have a VGA/RGB and you still want high def capabilities, you will need to get a VGA to component converter.
These converters/transcoders can cost alot, from $300 - $3000+ so you may not want to go this route unless you have a LCD or plasma TV WITH a VGA/RGB input.
If it has one, you shouldn't need a converter, but that is highly dependant on the TV.
Most TVs are smart enough to see if its a VGA or RGB signal and make the switch internally. Though the connectors are the same, the signal IS NOT.
If you have an older TV, or you just want some picture, you will have to go composite or S-video. Usually much easier, some laptops have a S-Video out, if yours does, just use a male to male S-Video cable.
If you dont, you will need a VGA to composite/S-video converter. These are A LOT cheaper, but can still cost upwards of $200. You should be able to find one at best buy or radio shack.
Without knowing what inputs and out puts you have, this is all i can offer atm.
But here are some good write ups on video signals.

My notebook does have the s-video output and I had planned on just using it on the older television in my bedroom. Looks like it should be as simple as getting the S-video cable and doing a little configuring.

Ok yea, then its really easy. Once you plug the wire into your TV, and choose the input, go to the display settings on the PC.
It should automatically see a TV is plugged in, you should see tow little boxes in the window, one has a 1, and the other a 2. Right click the second one, and go to attach from the pull down. Apply, and the video should pop right up.
If i remeber correctly. Havent used a PC in a while.
