First time grower needs to know one thing!
    #825960 - 08/18/02 04:21 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

So I have 7 1/2 pint jars sitting in a drawer.
It is about 81 degrees fahrenheit in there.
They are brownrice/vermiculite with the top 3/4 inches filled with only vermiculite.
60cc of non chlorinated water was also mixed in with the brf.
They are now sitting in the drawer closed and the bottom is made out of tin foil/paper towel.
While I was sterilizing them I had tin foil over the top (four holes in the metal cap of course).
Took the jars out, quickly took off tin foil and then innoculated, and placed the tin foil back on.
Now they are sitting in the drawer, and they still have the tin foil on them, but very loosely.
My question is, should I take the tin foil off and let the four holes be exposed?
Or should I leave the tin foil on top? It has been 2 days and still no signs of anything, I know thats normal but I just want to make sure.

It really doesn't matter, if you take them off then supposedly the vermiculite barrier will prevent contams from getting to the yummy brf. But the foil doesn't do any harm so I just leave mine on.

I agree, when I did my batch of jars I had tape (rated for use about 120degrees celcius) over the four holes. I just jabbed the needle through the tape to innoculate and then put more tape over the holes. (This also allowed me to loosen the lids since they were the two piece kind) I kept all the jars tightly sealed until they were almost colonized, then I flipped them and loosened the lid a bit for about the last week and a half of colonization. So leave the foil on, it won't hurt anything, chances are it may help against contams.

i dont know if you meant this the way I took it but if you innoculated immediately after sterilization then the jars were still hot and if the jars were still hot or even warm they will more than likely not colonize. I hope you meant after they were cool.

But what happened to the spores then? They got killed with the heat?
Can I re-innoculate the same cakes?

If the jars were still hot then the spores were killed just like the contams that you wanted to eliminate. Wait at least several hours after heating the jars to allow them to cool. They should be room temperature on the outside before you innoculate. Reusing the cakes should be fine as long as there's still enough water in them after heating them again. I'd sterilize them again to be safe before reusing them.

Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.
