Top COLONIZED Bottom ISN'T
    #825853 - 08/18/02 03:47 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I crumbled two 1/2 pint cakes anhd mixed with some scotts and the top looks a WHOLE lot whiter tan the bottom
Should I wait till the whole things colonizes or till the top has colonized
I'm thinking of just waiting it out and trying to get the whole thing to colonize
cambo!

take the tape off of your holes and turn your cakes up-side-down. This will help with air exchange. And since the top is colonized there wont be too big a problem with competetor spores getting in

how long have you waited? more colonized substrate often means larger shrooms. also, as the casing ages, it becomes less susceptible to contamination. thus, don't rush it. on the other hand, don't wait more then a couple weeks to case as sometimes portions of the substrate may have stalled. the mycelium will continue to colonize the substrate even after fruiting begins.

also, if some areas of your casing have stalled, you may want to examine your growing technique to help eliminate the problem in the future. some common causes of stalling include over saturation of the substrate, under saturation of substrate, contamination, ect.
