Best Free / Open Source apps

This has been done all over the place.. always with much dispute.
So, lets compile a list of what the shroomery deems to be the best currently available free / open source software (preferably GPL'd, but hey.. as long as its free). As a desktop environment I favour gnome, so my preference lies with gtk apps.
My suggestions:
aMSN : a free msn client with many features. Probably the most compatible I've yet discovered (my only complaint is that because it uses tk, its ugly, but that can be fixed)
Deluge : A brilliant, lightweight gtk torrent client. Often cited as the new uTorrent.
XChat : The irc client.
irssi : The other irc client .
nicotine+ : A decent (pretty) pyGTK based soulseek client.
Wireshark : A network protocol analyzer, useful on unencrypted college networks .
Compiz-fusion : A very pretty composite window manager. When used in combination with emerald it makes for a very pretty desktop
I've yet to find a decent gtk-based media player, I tried rhythmbox, but its just not as good as amarok.
I just found a gtk media player called exaile which apparently is attempting to mimic amarok but with gtk as opposed to qt. Compiling now
An update:
Guake: A gtk clone of Kukuake, which is a 'pop up console' like you get games (counterstrike, for instance). You press a button and a terminal appears. Very handy
TeXmaker: If you find yourself doing a lot of math.. this program is infinitely useful.. I read about it in someone else's thread.. and now its part of my arsenal
Banshee: A good gtk music manager. Has support for iPods and is probably the most functional music player out there.
GTKPod: If you have an iPod, this program allows for you to finally ditch windows all together..
I'll add more as I discover them
Anyways, what would you suggest?
Guake in action:

Then I pressed F12:

AWN a GTK based dock that is like the mac os one https://launchpad.net/awn
Deskbar, its kinda like the OS X spotlight when used with tracker indexing http://raphael.slinckx.net/deskbar/
Screenlets kinda like the Os X dashboard http://www.screenlets.org/index.php/Information
Yep i was once a OS X mac fan boy until i found out how apple fucks the open source community, can you tell?
