morel spore prints/cultures?
    #8161179 - 03/18/08 08:53 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I was wondering how one would best go about getting a culture for morel mushrooms from wild fruit bodies. I should be finding some soon and would like to culture some for making my own patches. What is the recommended procedure?

I need tropical cultures, ABM, V.v....!!!!

Well things don't always look as they are and things can be misread and mistaken for what they realy are so don't read too much into what I say since I might be mistaken myself. And remember I rarely ever give a definate answer.

Paul Staments book mycelium running talks about how to grow 'em. You can put them in a paper bag and collect spores, or you can use the stem butt method. I've heard of putting active charcoal in the agar helps alot not sure but looks awesome. and then grain I beleave rye would be ok. for the patch Paul made a bonfire and then put the spawn into the bonfire, and they grew in the spring time. I'd suggest getting that book because I read that in the middle of the night so I might not be on the dot with the info I just spewed, but definitely a good read.

yeah i guess you need to mix ashes in w/ your patch as they naturally occur around burn sites

I'm going to repost this here as well...
Well if you are wanting the spores for use in inoculating jars or growing/culturing or spawn, you absolutely can not do it like the other
mushrooms, because morels will have mucor mold growing on them along with their spores and spores of other contaminates. The best way to get
morel spores from a mature specimen is by having the morel eject its spores upward on to some plastic wrap, saran wrap and make sure not to allow the mushroom to touch the plastic. If you allow it to drop spores down you will find that the morel mushroom in an enclosed container or even wrapped with plastic or whatever, will turn to goo it will melt in other words, and with that melting it drips a lot of moisture loss from the mushroom tissue, and along with that a lot of contaminates and their spores. And if you can't get the mushroom to eject spores then you managed to get an immature specimen that wasn't ready yet. Your best chance is to get a really large sized morel, this would indicate that it has been around for a while to grow so large and usually these large ones are ready to produce spores.
So you will have to enclose it with plastic wrap but you can not use anything that falls, only what has been ejected upward onto the plastic
wrap, and yes its a destructive process that will result in the mushroom
turning to goo. The humidity and warmth of the season for some reason
stimulates their release. What type of container you use to hold your
mushroom could be anything from a plate to a strawberry container crate
like the ones at the grocery store that hold a pint of strawberries.

I don't agree with that. I've had a few prints of Morchella done standardly on foil/paper that have fired up wonderfully on agar. Mucor is more of a problem with isolations ime's.
