Philosophy is flawed. I don't see it as a debate.. I see my choices in life as a fact. Good or bad, they are my responsibility for making those choices. I don't blame my parents or society. I know I have free will at least. If you want to think that everything you do is predetermined, that's cool.. your life, your choice

Prisoner, in philosophy, free will was theorized in order to make people be held accountable for their actions in order for the justice system to work.
Shroomism, I really want to believe in free-will, but it's hard when it's so easily debated. Not killed in debate, but easily debated. Determinism is harder to poke holes in, though it can and has been done.
That's how I think, in terms of "truth" if there is such a thing. Wait, that's a whole different philosophical debate.
This girl is fucked once she's in the court system. She'll grow up hating the hand that feeds.

you can let the fates dictate you life, I chose to think for myself as opposed to allow someone long dead to do my thinking for me

Ahh, true, but in the face of debate, whether it can still stand firm is what is at the heart of the matter. Free will is much harder to defend than determinism.
However, I don't let this specific idea permeate to far into my thoughs, I recently went from compatiblism to determinism.
I can atest to the notion that free will is more romantic than it is truth, though it may be somewhat true. Most people need some idea of control in there lives, that's what attracts us to "god". "God knows everything and has it all worked out to beat Satan in the end." Sounds great, doesn't it?

to the contrary, anyone capable of developing thought has free will, determinism suggest we are incapable of thinking for ourselves

it's black and white, there's no gray area, either you have free will or you dont, it cannot be somewhat true. God has not decided my future, he has no say in how my life works, god as you apparently see him does not exist to me.
and no, being a slave doesnt sound in the slightest bit appealing

No, determinism says that what you have thought could not have been thought any other way, and that future thoughts will be predictable based on past events and laws of nature.
You still think for yourself, like yourself, and for yourself for that matter. You can even change "type" of thoughts you have, or your lyfestyle, but these changes are brought about by your reaction to past events. Reactions that are based on your psychology. All these types of things must be taken into account to be able to predict the future.
From what my proffesor recently told me, mathematicians are beginning to work on proving this...
I got a report to do, but if you wanna talk about some cool philosophy stuff, I could start a thread in that forum, just because this one has derailed pretty badly IMO.

No, you are misconstruing this, but like I said, just tell me and I'll start a thread in P&S. It'll be fun
