Damn Rye
    #823748 - 08/17/02 01:44 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

I am recently trying the one-step method of pressurizing my grain uncooked, opposed to boiling it first, and then pressurizing. In Stamet's book he says to let the grain sit in the jars over night. But when, I did this the grain started to sprout. If I go ahead and pressurize, will the mycellium still grow with the rye grain sprouting?

thanx

I would simmer the grain for 45 minutes or so. The grain will absorb as much water as it can. Put the stuff in the jars, then PC.

Both ways work well. If you are uncertain about water content just pre boil. Otherwise for every one cup of rye use 3/4 cup of water. Pressure cook without pre boil and you will be just fine.

I've done it both ways with birdseed. Never tried rye. It worked both ways for me, but it helps to rinse the seed under running water before putting it into my jars. Gets rid of some of the stuff that causes it to stick to the bottom and sides of the jar. Make sure to take your jars out of the pressure cooker as soon as possible and shake them right away to loosen the seeds from the bottom and sides of the jars or the seeds want to stick forever. At least with birdseed it does. Good luck and may your jars never contam.
