    #824899 - 08/18/02 04:29 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

This is Scots 3-1 compost mixed with verm.
The compost was not pasteurized.
What was done was a layer of compost and verm was put down then 1 1/2 pt. cake was crumbled and applied then a another layer of composted and verm, and then another cake, then mixed and a then a layer of just the compost.
Compost and verm was mixed with tap water until a few drops of water could squeezed out. Top layer was put on dry then missed real good
This is after 2 days, cakes were brf Hawaiian

$2.98 for 32 lb bag here. I am very impressed with it.

In reply to:

The compost was not pasteurized.

This could save alot of time.

Were there any special sterile precautions taken for the spawning.

Oh yea, GOOD JOB !

i did several batches of 3-in-1 pasturized, spawned w/rye, and they did great, fruiting now.
i did one batch unpasturized, used 2 quarts of rye to ensure speedy colonization, and ended up with bacteria [rotten apple smell].
needlesss to say, i'll be pasturizing any more i do.

That is what I'm planning to do soon, so I'm glad to see it is working well for you. How deep is your mixture and what is the L x W? I'm trying to get an idea of how many jars I should use for my containers and how deep I should make the substrate.
Thanks for the post.

pleezr: It is $3.64 for 32 lbs. at the Lowe's where I live....I haven't looked for it anywhere else.

Well my a buddy of mine did some un-pasteurized scotts the other day with no success. Contams set in within 3 days.
He also found it quite hard to get the water ratio right.
My buddy says he'll just be pasteurizing it from now on.

Still....Great work, man!

I can't find that stuff anywhere, you what stores are you buying it from?

Home Depot
Walmart
Agway

all those in my area carry Scotts brand stuff, but not their 3n1 compost mix. I'm very irritated by that.

Can you innoculate that stuff with spores? Or must you crumble a cake?
