Do I have casing right?
    #824493 - 08/17/02 08:42 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

OK, so for my second time growing I've decided to go with casing. It just seems like less of a hassle and allows for more experimentation. I just want to make sure I'm going about it correctly. (Check me on all of my jargon, I'm trying to make sure I understand everything) I have a lot of BRF left over from my pf cakes so I plan to make jars with that. I will incubuate them with a fishtank heater incubator I am building. I plan to make my bulk substrate out of a layer of scotts 3-1 and then my crumbled colonized cakes, then another layer of scotts 3 - 1. *Or should I mix up the scotts and the BRF cakes?* I will put these casings (probably two) into the incubator to colonize fully. I will transfer them to my perlite terrarium when the mycellium is just visible below the top layer of scotts, correct?

I have heard that if I let the mycellium take over the casing too much before I put it in the terrarium that it will "overlay" or something? Maybe I am confused about that. But do you see any potential hazards that I am missing? Your advise has made my first attempt very successful so far, as I am close to my first harvest! Anyway, thanks in advance for taking the time to read and consider my questions!

I always mix my bulk and spawn. Speeds up colonization and reduces the window for contamination.

Casing. I just use Miracle grow with moisture control. Wet it down and throw it in the oven covered with foil at 300 for an hour. Let cool. Then a 1/2 inch layer. I recommend one inch if you have a real virgourous strain. let sit until you see myc. poking through the surface. Then fan twice a day. When you see pins increase fanning to four times a day. You will be happy with the result from casing.
