format of hdd

Alright, so I just finished building a new computer and will be dual booting WinXP and Linux on it. I have a 160 gb hdd for this, 120 for windows, 40 for linux. Anyways I have a secondary hdd for storage, a 500gb. Right now it is still unformatted. I will be using it as a download directory for usenet, basic file storage such as pics, movies, wtf ever, and god knows what else. If I want this to be easily used in both windows and linux, I mostly use windows, as it is where all my video encoding/picture editing happens, but do like to play in linux, would NTFS be the best option? Or is there something else I should try? some files will be 12gb, possibly even larger..
thanks

use your 500 gig as your main with windows and the 160 gig as your linux drive..
i think you have to have ntfs if you ever want to upgrade to vista so i say go for it...
and if you arrange your drives like that you dont have to mess with the formatting with linux just format the other drive however linux wants and you dont have to worry about limiting the partition to 40 gigs..
keep your big files on your 500 gig.
this is pretty much the exact same setup i have. minus the linux install.

Bad idea what happens when windows fucks up and you need to reinstall it bound to happen, then all your data is lost. Or what if a hard drive fails then all your data is lost. The whole point of having two hard drives.

If you had vista you could virtually run linux in Microsoft virtual pc.

well, I may try vista later, but I have no reason to, as 1 I would have to buy it, even though it is only 29 dollars for ultimate from the university, and 2 all the things I do I do on XP, and it works perfectly, so why should I switch, yet to have anything i've needed vista for. I've also heard it is shitty and from research, windows 7 is in the making and will be released sometime in 2010, so I will wait.
also, just as jeverden said, I would never use an entire 500gb for windows install, as it will get fucked up eventually, and I don't want to have to lose all that data, even if i did use the 500 as my windows drive, I would partition 100gb or so for windows install, and rest for storage. But I have always used this method for my computers and it has always worked great.
I know linux has NTFS read and write capabilities, but last time I used them they were buggy and still a WIP....so, if anyone has any more recommendations that would be great.

I use my 500 Gb drive as a backup to my primary hard drives, and for extra storage.

Might go the opposite direction. Format the large drive using a unix file system and install drivers to allow the windows side to access it.

I used ext2fs windows driver for a while, it worked well, but I ended up with some corrupt files that neither OS could read, don't know whats at fault, but it happened. There is another one that I just heard about, can't remember the name at the moment its like extIFS or something.
also, there is a new version of ext2fs out, I may try it again, wish me luck

You cold also partition half the 500 gig hard drive for windows, and half for linux; or however much space you think you'll need for each. I usually reserve more space for windows. You should be able to run most linux windows apps form linux, anyhow.
