I tried ubuntu but i was turn off by the 800X600 or 640X480 resolutions. Are their any linux distro's with a better resolution?

I run Blag linux (www.blagblagblag.org) they are big supporters of free speech... good movement behind this distro and its lean it has all the things u want/need without most of the junk most distros include... btw i run 1024x768

PC Linux OS, it is great, I really enjoyed it on my last comp, my new one has XP for now, but will get PCLOS 2008 as soon as it is released.
Also, you did not install the graphics card on your new computer in linux if you could only have those low resolutions, or it doesn't have drivers for that card in linux

make sure you have your video card setup right or it wont have good resolutions as an option.

Not a fan of PClinuxOS or Ubuntu here and i found opensuse as frustrating as Vista. Also, a little birdie informed me about possible NSA involvement in opensuse after the microsoft novell deals. all speculation and no proof though as usual though.
I'm a big fan of Debian, but now i'm runing Mepis and love it alot. My res is 1280 x 1024. Recently got xmame and snes9x running smooth on it w00p. Plus it also pays to configure your resolution (and drivers for running live cd if thats an option) before a live cd is finished booting, most give you that option during a loading screen.

Yeah, i just prefer debian and mepis. Some people find little difference with pclinuxos and mepis. The difference for me was that i could get everything i wanted working on mepis. pclinuxos was one of the first i tried after migrating from windows and i found it buggy for what i wanted to do and felt like it was barely an improvement on my frustrations with windows. But, of course alot of people use it fine. For me, ubuntu was an overrated recommendation. Some people love it/swear by it, but with all thats out there its just about finding the right distro for you, trying many out. Earlier mepis distros were powered by ubuntu, but the move has been made to debian etch (stable), i'm not a developer, so thats all i really need.

I'm using Ubuntu at 1280x800 resolution. When I first booted it I had the same resolution problem but this site helped me fix it. http://www.funnestra.org/ubuntu/gutsy/
It might only apply to nvidia drivers tho

fedora is not bad... Ive run a couple versions... they usually pack it pretty good with software... but after trying 12 diff versions of linux I like "blag." Its based on fedora but they take out all the useless stuff most people dont use... nice n compact at like 700 megs n out of all the versions I've ran it has taken the least work to customize

Ubuntu is releasing a new version shortly, the distribution has a lot of momentum. I installed it on a buddies laptop last week and got WPA2 wifi, a bluetooth mouse, nice screen resolution, & printer working with no problems. He has a Sony laptop which comes with a lot of multimedia hardware buttons such as volume, display brightness, and those were working as well. I was impressed, and suggest it highly to anyone looking for a Vista alternative.

I just installed ubuntu on my computer, but I can't play my favorite games, even with wine. I think windows are still better for gaming.

yeah games native to linux are hard to come by. But some developers are releasing on it. I think UT, QuakeWars, and a few other great ones are on it for purchase. There is always Sauerbraten, PoliceOps, AssaultCube, and other native fps. Wine works with a few games, i'm sure morrowind actually works, i've seen reports anywho, not sure about oblivion, but i'm sure it would eventually if morrowind does.
windows is certainly better for gaming. no doubt about that. I hope that changes in the near future though as linux is coming much more widely recognised as a operating system with interest.

Not a chance. Microsoft killed the portability of the game industry when they silently dropped OpenGL from Windows NT (with a service pack update) and forced developers to use DirectX back in the mid 90's. Products, such as Cider, are helping open things back up, but they add another layer of bugs and slow games down a bit... not good for hard core gamers.
Microsoft, using Vista and DirectX 10, added another nail to the coffin of portable games. It is getting worse, not better, due to hardware licensing restrictions for manufacturers that want to release hardware that is Vista compatible.
