Im very new to this so please forgive any naivete in this post. A friend of mine and I have just started trying to mushroom hunt and were still swinging in the dark, using this place and other websites as resources. We just want to learn as much as we can.

Anyway, based on a few guides Ive read on this site , I think I may have gotten some Panaeolus subbalteatus. The main reason for this is the deep black sporeprints.

Location: Southern California

Habitat: a grassy, well-fertilized lawn.

Gills: dark brown, attached

Stems: vary in length from approx. two inches to four inches. Stems don’t seem as thick as they should, but they are reddish brown in color and have vague lines running up them.

Caps: are light brown to dark brown. The shape should be apparent in the photos. The texture is fragile and slightly rubbery and they range in diameter from the size of about a dime to over double the size of a quarter.

The spore prints came out very dark black (as shown).

Smells like an average mushroom.

Anything you can tell me about them would be fantastic. Am I way off, or on the right track, etc. Weve got a lot more locations staked out here in SoCal to check out, so I hope theres some happy hunting ahead.

Looks like subbs. Print them all as they often grow along with the purple-brown spored lookalike - Panaeolina foenisecii.

Thanks so much fellas. You've made our week.

Should I dry them out to eat them or just eat them fresh?

Subbs don't taste bad, or lose much potency upon drying. So either way. Apparently sometimes fresh subbs can cause stomach upset, but I've never experienced it.

My favorite thing to do is make lemon tea.

Lemon tea, that sounds amazing!

I usually just ground them up, and blend with some milk and ice cream, easiest way to get them down.  I wish I could just munch them down like I use to, but I gag every time I open a bag of 'em now haha.
