First time casing (Scotts 3-1) trouble?
    #822121 - 08/16/02 07:19 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Well this has been the squirrels first attempt at a casing, and he prepared it like this. Scotts 3+1 compost sterlized for an hour and a half at 15psi. In the containers he put an inch of the 3+1, then 2 crumbled cakes, and then another 1/2 - 3/4 inches of the 3+1 on top. Left it alone for 5 days, it colonized rapidly and it is time to move them, but here is the part he does not know what to do. He has a coir-verm casing layer ready, but there are already pins showing. How important would the casing layer be in this instance?

Well, it really comes down to your call - there are many pros and cons. My suggestion would be to put a very thin casing down - no more than like 1/4". After the first flush, lay down a little more.

My cat cased a tray that already had pins on it once with like 3/4" of vermiculite. He had shrooms doing nosedives and burrowing back into the casing. All he'd see would be the maturing base of the stem at the rest elongated inward.

I'm not an expert, but...you don't need to worry about a casing layer..

You are not supposed to sterilize bulk substrate.
It should be pasturized.

night_train sterilizes his 3-in-1, and it seems to work for him.

I?d like to hear from more people who have tried using it without treatment.

Sterilizing is fine. I just opened my reynolds hot bag (turkey size) in which I sterilized 6 pounds of the 3-1, and put a crumbled cake into. After a week in the incubator, I freaked out when I opened it, it was full of mycelium balls each was about the size of a golf ball, and there was only a bit of the 3-1 shake in the bottom. The squirrel was very happy and soon put it all in 2 pans and straight into the terraium.

Whose pic is that one above? Is that Scott's 3 in 1? If so what and how much of it, and what was used to spawn it? And was it an isolated strain?

If you want to keep things a little more simple (like I do), then you may want to check out knurd?s thread if you haven?t already.
