Autostitch...I love this program!
    #8230479 - 04/02/08 08:21 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

In the (fairly) recent thread about the best piece of software you use someone posted a link to "Autostitch". For years I have been taking panoramas with my cameras and trying to piece them together. It is tedious and usually unimpressive when done manually and I was never happy with the results. But this program is amazing! It does everything I always wanted to do with panoramas, and it does it all effortlessly. I am truly astounded at the ability this program has to stitch together a set of photos into a seamless panorama.

I decided I didn't want to go to the gym this afternoon so I took a hike instead. I climbed up small mountain nearby. About a 2 mile hike each way with about 1000 feet in elevation gain. While at the top I decided to shoot a set of photos. It was a hazy day, not the best for taking scenery photos, but I wanted to throw them into Autostitch just for kicks. So into Autostitch went 58 photographs encompasing more then 180 degree view from the top of the mountain. Below is the resulting photo it spit out for me. And this pic is only rendered at 10% of the size of the original photos.

So thanks to whoever reccomended this piece of software (I'm too lazy at the moment to look up the original thread). It has finallly made it possible for me to shoot those coveted panoramic photos from the tops of the many mountains I visit. I can't wait for the day that I get to shoot a set of fantastic photos from an amazing summit on a crytal clear day! When it happens I'll definately be sharing a spectacular panoramic image with my friends here at the Shroomery!

Crap, I just realized the picture was automatically resized when it uploaded to the Shroomery.  I guess there must be a size limit to uploaded images?  The original image is a 4899X758 jpg (535KB). Never had a problem before.

I could try again I guess.

Ahhhhh, 512 KB limit. Now I see. Maybe I can fix it.

Just reduce the quality of the image slightly whenever you go to save it. I'd love to see a bigger image, looks nice man.

Yeah, I would assume so. It might be fun to throw a bunch of randoms shit into it and see what it spits out. I'm guessing it'd just reject them, but who knows?

Looks awesome!

I remember my dad doing this as a kid with film photography.  He would take the pictures, then cut and paste them in a long panorama.  They would always look a little off.

Im gonna try this next time I get some elevation.

I wonder if you could take a 360 view around in a circle, in a closed space?

Holy shit, great pics!  Makes me wanna go out and find something to shoot.  Hmmmmmm, Downtown at night....the beach...a marina...all these ideas are popping in my head all of the sudden.

I wish I would've shot a series of photos when I was in Peurto Rico a while back.  I didn't even think about it that day because it was always such a failure trying to produce panoramas.  And it was such a gorgeous day also!
