Brother act - Siblings snagged for growing marijuana
By Barbara Lyon, Editor Monday, March 31, 2008 10:28 AM CDT
A leaky pipe led to the arrest of pair of brothers for growing marijuana in their apartments in Menomonie.
On Tuesday afternoon, the manager of an apartment building on Sixth Street East called Menomonie Police Department to report the discovery of what he thought was marijuana being grown in a storage area. The crawl space was lined with a reflective coating and had grow lights hanging over the plants.
According to the criminal complaint, the manager uncovered the operation when he was making a repair in the upstairs apartment of 23-year-old [name redacted].
When investigators responded to the scene, they confirmed that samples of leaves shown to them by the manager did indeed resemble marijuana. While one investigator left to secure a search warrant, the other stayed to keep watch at the house.
A short time later, the investigator observed a vehicle pull up and two men emerge, one of them carrying a large plastic container. A few moments after he entered the building, the investigator saw a light turned on in the upstairs apartment.
Meanwhile, the other man paced back and forth on the sidewalk outside the residence. The investigator approached the man who identified himself as [name redacted]’s brother, 20-year-old [name redacted].
When the first investigator returned to the scene, he saw [name redacted] come out of the residence bearing the tote. Inside the container were between 20 and 30 marijuana plants, some of them bearing large buds.
Following his arrest, [name redacted] gave the officers permission to search his apartment. In the storage area, the investigators found six marijuana plants about four or five feet tall growing in large plastic tubs. In addition, there were jars of a green substance that appeared to be cut marijuana.
When questioned, [name redacted] admitted to growing the plants and told the investigators that he had purchased marijuana for $300 in the Twin Cities several weeks ago.
Although [name redacted] would not reveal whether he was selling marijuana, officers found notes in his apartment listing people’s names accompanied by monetary amounts as well as profit and loss statements.
Following the arrest of his brother, [name redacted] was interviewed by an investigator, informing the officer that he also had between 15 and 16 marijuana plants growing at his 21st Avenue East apartment.
In addition to plants of various heights, a search of [name redacted]’s apartment revealed a bong and marijuana pipe. He told investigators that he and his brother began to grow marijuana about three months ago.
Samples from both residences were tested and found to contain THC. Both brothers have been charged with maintaining a drug trafficking place and with the manufacture/ delivery of THC.
[name redacted] also faces charges of possession with intent to deliver THC, while his brother [name redacted] has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
[name redacted] is scheduled to make a second appearance before Judge William Stewart in Dunn County Circuit Court on April 22, with a final pre-trial set for May 20. [name redacted] will make his second appearance before Stewart on April 29, with a final pre-trial scheduled for May 27.

So now our hard earned tax payer dollars will be spent on a keeping a couple of guys in prison who just wanted to make a little extra dough and get stoned. A good example of how our war on drugs is just another government racket designed to put money in government and corporation hands.
