here's a good question... what is a 'SECONDARY METABOLISM?'

and why is it an evolutionary relic? even really basic cellular life such as plants, or if you think plants aren't basic at all, fungus has metabolic chemistry that is considered unused 'secondary' metabolism. What is this metabolism used for? and why the fuck does it have an outdated use? at what point in time would a plant have USED a secondary metabolism. And if so, are there examples of existing organisms that use these metabolic reactions as their PRIMARY metabolism?

Secondary metabolism is used to describe metabolic processes which are not immediately necessary for the continuation of life.
Imagine you have a microb that eats food A for millions of years. Something changes, and food A mostly goes away, so the microb evolves to eat food B. After many millions of years, the microb can no longer live on food A, and no longer needs food A for survival, but can still use food A should food B become scarce.

Cool, thanks for the info Seuss.

Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems.
