Poopy seeds wont sprout!!
    #822506 - 08/17/02 01:16 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I've planted some poppy seeds about one week ago outside, and some in a big pot inside, in a sunny window... But the seeds won't sprout!!! I'm usally used to sprouting in 4-5 days... It has been quite hot these last days, but I've been watering twice a day... Why would they sprout??? The heat??

If you live in the northern hemisphere, you're waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too late in the year to be planting opium poppies. They need cold weather to get started (like, 40 degrees Fahrenheit at night, maybe 50s in the day) and they need hot weather during the flowering phase. Wait until next year (depending on the climate you're in, sometime between January and April) and try again.

Not entirely true, depending on where exactly in the northern hemisphere he lives, he can plant poppies for the "fall plantings" and still have decent sized pods before the frost hits, assuming it doesn't hit really early this year.

When would I plant poppys in Colorado? I would guess winter, but it goes below 0 degrees more than sometimes.

I'm in the south of France, so the winters are not usally very cold.. Could I sow in , say, september, october for flowering at spring?? If there isn't any frost that is.. Or, could I plant in pots, let devellope, and plant early spring? I should use peat pots, no?? I've got fluos, so they couls stay during the winter, if it gets too cold, inside...

Yes you can.
Sow the seeds in the Autumn. The seeds will go through the Winter even if there is a lot of frost with no problem........a natural period of dormancy.
Germination will take place in Spring when the weather warms up. Going through the cold period helps with germination.
Mix the seeds with some fine sand before you sow them in the ground. This will help you to broadcast them properly and not end up with all the seeds in one spot and crowding each other out.

I hope this helps.

interesting
yes they should be planted in late fall or spring
its fairly unusual that they didnt sprout as contrary to what some ppl said poppies dont need cold to germinate.
i really dont know what could be wrong with it perhaps extremely shitty soil?

The soil is quite good, I havent had any problems with it before.. I also started so seeds inside in a pot full of potting soil, nothing either.. I'll try another strain to see if it is the seeds of that strain that are shitty... I'll let U know..

That's very intriguing... A Few questions though.

1.)How deep did you plant them?
2.)Where'd you get them (ie. seed supplier, cooking supplier, super market seasoning section, etc.)?

3.)What Color are they?
4.) did you use potting soil?
5) What strain are they?

The one I tried outside were sowed on the top of the soil, wich is a miw of garden soil and potting soil and has been there for 2 years, them the soil was pressed down a little.. The seeds came from a "bouquet" of seed pods bought ( euh, no "found" ) in a garden center.. I don't know what strain they are, but the seeds are dark blue- black... The ones I tried inside were paeonyflorum , coming from a garden in england ( I did ask this time ) taken a few months ago... Know, a little thinking gave me these ideas:
1) the seeds from the pods may no be viable ( perhaps heated to dry the pods as they wern't open, but he seeds seem mature)
2) You have to wait a year before sowing the seeds from this season... Am I right? I could just go and buy some seeds from the garden center, in paquets, and sow all the ones I have in spring ( something like a dormancy period for the seeds?? )

Hrmm, well couple of conclusions:

a.) the seeds got baked to dry the pods, they're now cooked and inviable, put them on a bagel and bon apetit.

b.) make a small furrow in the ground where you plan on planting like make half an inch deep with your finger, sprinkle the seeds into it as evenly as possible and then cover up and slightly pack the soil, keep it moist (but don't disrupt the soil in watering). then see what happens.

also, depending on where you live in europe you can plant for a fall planting and have some pods before it gets too cold, hoping the weather doesn't go nuts.
